About this deal

Katsuhiro Otomo's 1988 cyberpunk classic is arguably one of the greatest anime features ever created, earning itself a gorgeous native 4K presentation in a set that is not without its potentially deal-breaking drawbacks. Overall, this is Akira's definitive home release and shows off what makes this movie so special like never before. While being interrogated by the police, Kaneda meets Kei, an activist within the resistance movement, and tricks the authorities into releasing her with his gang. mixes are superb, delivering clear and coherent dialogue throughout (yes, some of the vocals are particularly comedic in the English dub) and effects are tremendous, lighting up the soundstage with kinetic powers, explosions, thunderous gunfire and some serious heavy weaponry come the final confrontation.

While we have already had some amazing boxsets for Akira on DVD and Blu-ray, this new 4K remaster has a lot of new stuff to offer as well. put the work on indefinite hold just prior to filming as Waititi had chosen to first direct Thor: Love and Thunder, the sequel to Thor: Ragnarok, which he had also directed.Akira is considered a landmark film in the cyberpunk genre, particularly the Japanese cyberpunk subgenre. In Channel 4's 2005 poll of the 100 greatest animations of all time featuring both film and television, Akira came in at number 16. Home › Recommendation › Films To Watch › Funimation’s 4K UHD Limited Edition set of “Akira” is well worth the time and investment.

For many, it was their first exposure to the genre, a neon dystopian look not only into the world of the fictional Neo Tokyo, but into the world of anime as a whole. Japanese would have been the right choice to please many long-time fans, but if neither of those omissions are a dealbreaker, then what we have got is pretty damn good. The group's assembly was necessitated by the unconventionally high starting budget of around ¥500,000,000, intended to achieve the desired epic standard equal to Otomo's over 2,000-page manga tale. The two events collide when the mysterious child appears before Tetsuo (voiced by Nozomu Sasaki), forcing him to crash his motorbike traveling at a deadly speed. Assisted by fellow esper Masaru, Japan Self-Defense Forces Colonel Shikishima recaptures Takashi, has Tetsuo hospitalized, and arrests the Capsules. The material on this site may not be reproduced, distributed, transmitted, cached or otherwise used except with the prior written permission of The Digital Bits, Inc.

But he is really more powerful than anyone imagined and breaks out, creating a swathe of destruction across the city as he mutates into another life form. Seyama ( Tokyo Godfathers, Princess Mononoke), Akira is a rare anime gem that never seems to lose any steam. Look, if you’re like Darryl, purchasing Akira in 4K UHD was a foregone conclusion the moment that the set was announced by Funimation. For those more forgiving, Manga Entertainment UK's 4K Blu-ray release of Akira is still a stunner, and - DNR notwithstanding - an otherwise flawless upgrade of a presentation in native 4K (however the fact that there is no HDR layer may well be an issue for fans who want to pick it up - we've reached out to the studio PR to get some answers as to why this disc seems to differ from its preceding Japanese 4K counterpart). It was re-released on July 13, 2013, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the film, and again on September 21, 2016.

Finally, the portion that will really tickle OG Akira fans, a roundtable discussion with four principle cast members hosted by sound director Susumu Aketagawa. The dialogue is clearer amid the chaos, making it easier to identify various individual sounds: organic from inanimate.

From some of the conversation, it seems that they haven’t been in the same room for nearly 30 years, so it leads to quite a few fun tidbits.
