About this deal

It's been a long time since I read a Shirley Hughes book, but this was definitely one of my favourite childhood books! It's like a mirror image, and if ever there was a storybook that could be said to cast domestic tedium in a rosy light and remind you what it's all about then this is it. On the last page, Alfie, his mum, Annie Rose, Mrs MacNally, Maureen and the window cleaner are sitting cosily round the kitchen table with tea and biscuits - the perfect celebration for the perfect little hero.

She focuses on small moments of everyday childhood life, be that a birthday party, losing a toy, going to the seaside, making new friends; Hughes captures the beauty in our quotidien lives as children through her colourful, detailed drawings. Alfie was so excited to be the first one into the house after their walk, that he slammed the door shut. And then (not only, but also) we have the treatment of time in the book, the way the verso spread is slightly ahead of the text on the recto page and then, when the impact of the text starts to hit home, we appreciate the recto imagework even more. Encouraged and inspired by visits to Liverpool’s magnicent Walker Art Gallery, Shirley developed a lifelong interest in “narrative painting”, or pictures that tell stories. This story of Alfie getting himself into trouble will teach students some resourcefulness, life lessons and a great laugh. Take a look at the moment where Alfie starts to cry, his face crumbling as he realises the predicament of his situation.

Besides, Hughes captures real-life London so well and I like how there are little stories taking place in the background.series, tells of a rivalry between amiable Digby O’Day (he’s a dog) and his fashionable neighbor Lou Ella (she’s a human). Shirley Hughes, well known for her books including Alfie and Annie Rose, is one of the best-loved and most innovative creators of books for young children. I believe this a good read for young readers because I feel like they would be able to relate well to Alfie's problem. Alfie gets out and about in the garden with Dad, in this glorious book about growing, playing and sharing.

The pictures are key to this text because they provide a narrative of their own, alongside the written text on each page. But unfortunately all's not fair in love and friendship, and Alfie -- with a little help from Grandma and Bernard -- has to discover what a true friend looks l. The narrative is a little more grown up than the Alfie stories or Dogger , and reads like a folktale or myth that is passed down through generations.Author and illustrator Shirley Hughes OBE was the first ever Book Trust Lifetime Achievement Award winner. She was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and was the first recipient of BookTrust's Lifetime Achievement Award. If you've seen the Alfie and Annie Rose books before, you'll recognize some of the illustrations in this collection - which I loved because it felt like I was getting the story behind the pictures that are only hinted at in the counting book for example.

Her first book - Lucy and Tom's Day - was published in 1960, and she followed it with, among others, Dogger and the Alfie series. In a brand new collection of stories and poems, Alfie has a spooky late-night adventure with an owl and introduces us to his secret den in the garden. In Alfie Gets In First, a window cleaner nearly saves the day by climbing up his ladder to let himself in an open window. But Alfie has such a great time that he finds he doesn't even need his special blanket -- and he makes a new friend too! I can read a new Alfie book to my girls without worrying what I'm going to see when I turn the page. I remember being read Alfie stories almost every night by my parents and as a child, I fell in love with the adventures that Alfie got up too. Christmas is rapidly approaching, almost as fast as Mae Morgan's new sibling is expected on the scene. Shirley Hughes is the illustrator of more than two hundred children’s books and has won many prestigious awards, including the Kate Greenaway Medal twice.
