Andrea:The Altra Escalante 3 is a zero drop, neutral daily trainer that has an anatomical toe box and a soft knit upper. I took these out for a slightly longer run around 10 miles, and my knees and calves were extra sore the next day. I think the flexibility results from a combination of this shoe's soft cushioning and the deep flex grooves in the outsole. Otherwise, I am really pleased with the update and look forward to putting many more miles on the shoe.The ST-4 doesn’t have this issue because the thicker overlays add a structure to the upper, locking your foot down nicely. In addition to the performance-based analysis, the Altra Escalante 3 also impressed with its durability. The midfoot and heel are normal width and I did not have any pressure points from any part of the shoe. That being said, the stability of the upper has greatly improved from previous versions, which did allow quite a bit of medial-lateral foot translation inside the shoe. There should be no concerns about premature wear and tear; one runner estimated a shoe life of at least 300 miles.
