A waitress at Inoya Cafė, she attended Yomiyama North Middle School during 1983, though she was not part of Class 3-3. The rest of the students, devastated by the unexpected loss, decided to carry on as if their classmate were still alive, going so far as to keep the desk in place and bringing it to the graduation ceremony.

Sanae reveals that a student did indeed die that night, and her name might have been Misaki, shocking Kōichi. Mei reveals that her mother had a stillbirth 12 years ago, which made her obsessed with dolls; this hobby has led to her and Mei treating each other as strangers. In the manga, his lung problems often cause him to collapse when he witnesses all the death and murder happening in the class.

At the beginning of the story, she gives him advice about Yomiyama Middle School through a series of "rules". In the novel, she is responsible for the murder of Manabu Maejima, Izumi Akazawa, Takako Sugiura, Junta Nakao, Shigeki Yonemura, and her husband Kensaku during the summer trip. Mei dislikes cell phones, saying that it disturbs her to be connected to other people at all times by electromagnetic waves, most likely a by-product of her solitary nature. Kouichi and Mei's relationship continues to develop to the point that he frequently comes to Mei's apartment and on one such occasion, he meets Kirika, Mei's mom, who she says only treats her like the other dolls in her house.

In Episode 9, Mei is walking along with Kouichi behind Tatsuji Chibiki who asks them about the behaviour of Nakao the day he died.
