I would say you must know a lot about films and directors, but I don't and I still enjoyed this book. And this isn’t the first time that the deconstruction of one-on-one interviews has taken center stage in Ayoade’s work. You get a sense of how he came to be the slightly strange (and I say that lovingly) person he is now. BAFTA Television awards 2014: Richard Ayoade with the BAFTA for Male Performance in a Comedy Programme".

The only faults I saw in this book was I didn't get a lot of the references to celebrities enough to enjoy the joke to it's full capability and I wish the middle portion was more like the 'Interview' with himself section as they were definitely my favourite parts. He takes plenty of diversions both into his own childhood and cultural references (both classic and pop) to make his case. Ayoade has written three comedic film–focused books: Ayoade on Ayoade: A Cinematic Odyssey (2014), The Grip of Film (2017), and Ayoade on Top (2019).

The villains are the defensive ones; shyness can be interpreted as a kind of aggression: ‘Who are you to care so much how you come off? Our tour manager is another 21-year-old saying, ‘This is very important publicity, Anglia television want to do a feature.

Ayoade was featured in a bit-part as a reporter in the HBO television film The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2004). In 2009, Ayoade co-starred with Joel McHale in the pilot for an American version of The IT Crowd, reprising his role with the same appearance and personality; however, no series was commissioned, and the pilot never aired. In an interview with The Sunday Times, Laurence said he begged for Richard’s support over the race row.
