About this deal

Ben Elton is a champion amongst the best and whole deal comedic creators and performers on the planet. And I do not believe any person of goodwill – male or female, trans or cis – would pretend otherwise. His first television appearance came in 1981 as a stand-up performer on the BBC1 youth and music programme Oxford Road Show. She even undergoes the humiliating casting couch charade of a final reading with Harvey Weinstein to land the role, just before Weinstein is exposed as a sexual predator and the whole project becomes too ‘toxic’ to proceed. The Upstart Crow, like the TV series Upstart Crow, a comic version of William Shakespeare's life and society, and sharing some of the same actors and characters, opened in London on 7 February 2020.

He has speculated on a future move back to London when their children have completed their schooling. In 1985, Elton produced his first solo script for the BBC with his comedy-drama series Happy Families, starring Jennifer Saunders and Adrian Edmondson. The Young Ones, Blackadder and Saturday Live weren't just a laugh for me; I constructed friendships, my sense of humour, and – let's face it – my identity around them. I would have liked more of a focus to the story, which only really got going in the last 1/4 of the book. A mathematician spinning the numbers to influence public opinion, a world-weary police officer struggling to keep up with inclusivity as well as other small cogs in this magnified melting pot of rage look so like our own world that it's hard to believe this is simply fiction.

He had his writing to occupy him: 16 novels now, not to mention three series of Shakespeare sitcom Upstart Crow (plus a stage version, opening in the West End early next year). As a generation x-er myself I can totally relate to the plight of Detective Matlock who feels cumbersome in this rapidly changing world of identity and obsessive political correctness. Not only does it address identity politics, as its title suggests, but it considers this in our broader historical context: of the fracturing of western democracies in the last few years; the influence of social media; Trump, as well as the Brexit vote of 2016. The result, The Young Ones had an inconspicuous business influence (at any rate, at first), yet its social effect was Goliath.

I'm going to say upfront that while I really enjoyed this book, I'm not sure the humour would be for everyone. No target is safe in this very-near-future world of Elton's and he fires shots seemingly indiscriminately. I wonder what the discussions behind the scenes were like, because this book feels a little compromised.I've always liked Ben Elton without ever being his biggest fan but in this book, he genuinely spoke to me. This gibbering lunatic had to be stopped, Not just for the sake of Toby’s own immensely lucrative contract but for the sake of millions of contracts like it.

e. Margaret Thatcher and Norman Tebbit, at the time the Conservative PM and social occasion executive exclusively), which made him a traditionalist daily paper target. Lots of people died but I didn’t really care about most of them because they were just stereotypes, and I know that was part of the discussion about identities, but if I only wanted satire and commentary, I wouldn’t read a novel. Matlock, a fifty-something, white heterosexual man, also falls foul of modern social conventions at the morgue when he and his team go to view Sammy’s body. Featuring comic sketches similar to those on The Ben Elton Show and staged studio discussion between Elton and 23-year-old Alexa Chung, the show's aim was to "contrast Elton's middle-aged viewpoint with Chung's younger perspective" (although Elton was responsible for the scripts). In minutes they had created a viral post accusing ‘crazed trans multi-cultural zealots’ of claiming that a dead transsexual was as much an English hero as the fighter pilots who had died during the Battle of Britain. They decided to settle in North Fremantle, Western Australia [56] and they also maintain a home in East Sussex, England.
