About this deal

They go on to create a number of varied written outcomes using the text as a starting point including recounts, formal letters, dialogue, descriptions, obituaries and writing their own epic, heroic narrative using various poetic devices. Beowulf, is a true hero who actually fights and kills monsters with his bare hands and it ain't pretty. This retelling captures the rhythm and drama of the original text but in a far more accessible way than some other tellings for children.

Standing head and shoulders above his comrades, Beowulf single-handedly saved the land of the Danes from a merciless ogre named Grendel and from his sea-hag mother. Hrothgar, who had once done a great favor for Beowulf’s father Ecgtheow, accepts Beowulf’s offer to fight Grendel and holds a feast in the hero’s honor. His life might be over, they said, but his name and his deeds would live on as long as his tale was told. He has written over 150 books, including The Butterfly Lion, Kensuke’s Kingdom, Why the Whales Came, The Mozart Question, Shadow, and War Horse, which was adapted for a hugely successful stage production by the National Theatre and then, in 2011, for a film directed by Steven Spielberg. In the third act, Beowulf has gone back to his homeland a hero and becomes king after the passing of his father. I pointed out some of the interesting history, and the interpolated Christianity which didn't fit the original story - and we waded through the gore. This is a series of six lessons (including PP and worksheets) on Beowulf by Michael Morpurgo that focuses on different areas of the UKS2 N. He heard about king Hrothgar – he was the king of the Dan e s – Grendel has been terrifying his people and eating them – even his strongest men !

The Anglo-Saxon story of Beowulf is told in three short animations, covering his battles with the monster Grendel and Grendel's mother. The illustrations in this children's story book are as brutal as the descriptive language which make it all the better! Beowulf, a prince of Geatland, hears of the Danes’ suffering and gains permission from his king to sail to their assistance. In the Scandinavian kingdoms of the Danes and the Geats, young Geatish prince Beowulf comes to the aid of Hrothgar, king of the Danes, when the latter's people are repeatedly ravaged during the night by the evil human-eating monster Grendel. My girls were pretty shell-shocked by the gratuitous sexuality, and drunken revelries, and THEN Grendel entered and ripped someone in half, whereupon Meredith wailed in distress, "WHY ARE WE WATCHING THIS? I could really imagine I was Beowulf , saving lives and protecting the inn ocent from ferocious monsters!

What I liked about this book is the amazing descriptions that allows the reader to enter another world, it also includes alliteration that adds special effects to the book. I recommend this book to girls and boys age 9+ because kids under nine might get scared of this book when it is read. This ancient Anglo-Saxon tale is brilliantly retold by Micheal Morpurgo and has the children enchanted. You can also read about his life in War Child to War Horse,a collaborative biography with Maggie Fergusson.

I really enjoyed this read and I was surprised by the fact it was set in Christian times as opposed to pagan gods. Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books (starred review)Long ago a Scandinavian warrior fought three evils so powerful they threatened whole kingdoms. Inspired by the challenge, Beowulf sails to Denmark with a small company of men, determined to defeat Grendel. To touch the lives of children, to witness their listening and reading silence, is reward enough in itself. There are graphic descriptions of violence, as you'd expect, but the tales are well told in a way that is suitable for the older child.
