Nichols told me that in deciding to make the film he was looking for patterns in society “and in humans, things we do, things we know we do.Put in context of the mid-sixties, Danny Lyon fills an empty chasm left between 'The Wild One' and 'Easy Rider', documenting an important epoch of American subculture. Lyon was a member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, which makes for a bit of offscreen common ground with another 1960s-set Telluride premiere, Rustin. But both the book and the film go deeper than that because the works are supported by the interviews Lyon conducted which were transcribed and those words contain harsh truths about America. His many books include The Movement (1964), The Bikeriders, The Destruction of Lower Manhattan (1969), Knave of Hearts (1999), Like a Thiefs Dream (2007) and Deep Sea Diver (2011).
