About this deal

Ideally, decking oil treatments should only be applied when air temperatures are 10 degrees centigrade or above. Factors such as the wood type, age, condition, and the desired finish can all have an influence on which type of decking treatment to use. Avoid applying clear Anti-Slip Decking Oil 430 as a stand alone finish as this offers limited UV protection.

It implements a deep penetrating oil formula that’s great for timber decking and can even be used on garden furniture. This is to remove loose leaves, dirt and other organic matter that can settle on the deck and erode or damage the decking finish. I’ve just built a large deck area using new, untreated softwood scaffolding boards and am now looking at the best way to preserve these and maintain the natural look… do I put preservative on before deck oil ? You could certainly try the pressure washer first however, as this can remove much of the oil and clean the wood thoroughly for fresh application. Do you want to enhance its natural colour, or are you looking to add a bit of personality with a new hue?

Oils are also easy to maintain as they wear, simply ensure the surface is clean and dry and then you are able to apply a top up coat when needed, usually around 1 or 2 years down the line, depending on use. If necessary and before application, de-grease the dried surface with Osmo Brush Cleaner and Thinner (degreaser), always trial apply! Whether you’ve gone for cheap decking or something sturdier and longer-lasting, blackening is a risk, especially after a long, wet winter. The finish is satin-matt, offering a subtle sheen that enhances the wood's appearance without being too glossy.

With regular sweeping and cleaning throughout the year the oil will be great for repelling moisture. Water-based oils are more environmentally friendly and easier to clean up, while solvent-based oils tend to be more durable. Household cleaners could degrade and strip the oil from the decking boards, leaving them unprotected and exposed to water and dirt ingress. To keep softwood decking in tip-top condition it is recommended that after an initial application of 2 thin coats to new or untreated decking, a thin maintenance coat of decking oil is applied 2 or 3 times a year. For exotic hardwood with a naturally high oil content such as Massaranduba, Bangkirai or Garapa, Osmo recommend that they should be allowed to weather for about 2-3 months (in winter up to 5 months).Pressure impregnated wood and tropical species like Massaranduba, Bangkirai, Garapa, Iroko need to weather off for at least 3 months. Black on wood could be a range of thing from tannins staining, mould spores water damage, stains from fixings.
