Rather than use different fountain pens which wouldn’t be fair as I don’t have five identical FP’s, or go through the faff of refilling and emptying one pen, I used my Zebra G Titanium nib in my excellent Tachikawa Comic Pen Nib Holder, Model 40. They are both water-soluble and create clean, controlled shading and wash effects when brushed over with a water brush, unlike other inks that feather or separate into garish component colors. That said, in our experience, even Carbon Black will smear unless used on watercolor paper and given plenty of time to dry. Black inks can have warm, cool, or neutral undertones depending on the combinations of dyes or pigments used to make them. Sometimes you just want a black ink that is as black as possible and these three are the blackest of the black.

There are a few top performers, but every ink has its own unique character and is worthy of consideration. It’s most often found in a variety pack with a range of ink colors, including standard options like black and blue, plus shades for creative uses, like pink, green, purple, and turquoise.

The highlighters used were the Stabilo Boss and Monami Essenti Stick (discontinued, but you can find similar gel highlighters).
