And there he was organizing the ghettoization, humiliation, degradation and starvation of more than 30,000 Jews in the town, making it easier for them to be rounded up by the Gestapo and the SS. I thought it was fascinating that both boys saw them almost like little toys in the air, independent accounts of the same experience. Edie went on to become an acclaimed clinical psychologist, and this is her incredible story of resilience and healing. Lengyel was a surgical assistant in Transylvania when she was deported to Auschwitz; she was able to secure work in an infirmary, a job that ultimately saved her life.

Of course, it was a bigger phenomenon that went beyond West Germany—Vietnam War protests, the Prague Spring—that’s the wider atmosphere. There were ruses she and many others used, with stories about lost papers, about being bombed out, taking on false identities.

It is the most profound, haunting, and soul-churningly beautiful book I have ever read about the atrocity. The other thing to add about Bauer is that he was the guy who gave Mossad, the Israeli secret service, the tip-off on the whereabouts of Adolf Eichmann so that they could kidnap him and bring him to Jerusalem for trial. It is a challenging read, namely because it is difficult to swallow in one go, but it would be hard to think of any book that feels more important, immersive and original.
