About this deal

She enjoyed books of art work and as she would find new interests I'd use that as a key or indicator for her next Christmas or birthday gift. Other influences Froud cites include the Robinson brothers ( Thomas, Charles and William), [46] the Pre-Raphaelites, William Morris and Northern European art from the 1500s and 1600s.

But whether your seeking wisdom, inspiration, or just a simplistic beauty in their existence, Fairies is a guide to the impossible made possible, the magic in wonder, and to a race of beings who, having always existed, are seen not through the eyes but through the heart and mind. Brian Froud's work is caricatured and lively, more evocative but also more repetitive, and it makes the disjointed bestiary a particular delight. After graduating, Froud spent five years working as a commercial illustrator in Soho, London before moving to Chagford, Devon in 1975.

Our resources are crucial for knowledge lovers everywhere—so if you find all these bits and bytes useful, please pitch in. The best answer I can give is that I don’t have much of a choice in whether I believe in them or not, for they seem to insist on my painting them. Faeries, thirty years after the original, has been done up all new and golden, but there is more to this book then just a new cover. Froud cites the early influence of Rackham, "in particular, [Rackham's] drawings of trees that had faces", as sparking his interest in illustrating fairy tales, and describes having had a love of nature from childhood that has informed his style.

But don't let the glowing images fool you into thinking this is just another coffee table "art" book. According to Wired, Froud is "one of the most pre-emiminent visualizers of the world of faerie and folktale".

They referred to the work of leading British folklorist Katharine Briggs as one of their main sources for information about faeries. Froud is married to Wendy Froud ( née Midener), a puppet-maker and sculptor whom he met at Jim Henson Studios in 1978 while working on The Dark Crystal. Their son Toby (born 1984) portrayed the infant of the same name in Labyrinth at the age of one, [41] and later became a puppeteer and creature fabricator, [42] working alongside his parents on The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance as design supervisor.
