About this deal

You'll have extras using this combination, like Space on one of fire buttons, auto-fire option, even dedicated button for UP like consoles do if you want to. Is there a way to use a joystick with two fire buttons and tell the game to use that second fire button to throw grenades instead of the space bar?

Upon unboxing the C64 Mini's box, you might be struck by how adorable the miniature retro console is. This BASIC program reads out both joystick ports and shows the pushed joystick arm (method: bit test).Regardless, the C64 is remarkably easy to use, thanks to the modern interface which lets you select games, adjust display settings to imitate old tube TVs, and save and load titles. Tulip Computers (which had acquired the Commodore brand name in 1997) licensed the rights to Ironstone Partners, which cooperated with DC Studios and Mammoth Toys in the development and marketing of the unit. In use, the joystick feels very stiff and immovable and while your movements will mostly register on screen, it just doesn't feel that way in your hand. It seems that my all time favorite joystick (Atari) is going on sale again, I hope I can get some units!

Now Retro Games is back with a distinctly less mini version of THEC64 – which I’m now going to refer to as The C64 for my own sanity – and what it loses in charm it gains in functionality. However, there’s no denying that it certainly looks the part: this is an impressively accurate recreation, right down to the odd F1-F8 buttons (there are two assigned to each key and you have to hold Shift to type the even-numbered ones). Marcelo wrote:The if you press the button in joystick in port 1, it will produce a space, so you can put that one on the floor and press it with your feet, and use port 2 to play the game.

The C64 has two Joystick ports, but you will notice they are labelled Control Port 1 and Control Port 2. The ability to stick C64 games onto a USB stick makes it a far more attractive proposition, though: the 64 games on here may vary in terms of quality and accessibility but opening it up to a library of around 20,000 official and homebrew games makes things a lot more exciting. Back in 1980, I was fooling around with Ohio Scientific Superboard 99, later making it in to a full fledged C1P. These include the aforementioned Bear Bovver as well as the fantastic Attack of the Mutant Camels, though on a personal note the removal of Skool Daze stings a little. To the immediate upper left and right of the stick, there are two buttons which didn't seem to provide any functionality in any of the games we played for this review.

That's why it's very nice for me to know that the Aliexpress ones are almost the same as the classics. If you need all that you’re not really the target audience – there are FPGA based complete modern refits of the C64 mainboard that do all you want that will fit in an original C64 case with keyboard, or whatever modern equivalent you care to fit and are compatible with all legacy hardware and have modern video standards like HDMI. There is also an engrossing 2017-developed release on board: Galencia, which plays homage to the formative arcade shoot ’em up Galaga, as well as the vintage text adventure Planet of Death, providing a chance to put that keyboard to use.In March 2018, British company Retro Games Ltd launched THEC64 Mini, a dinky version of the classic Commodore 64 hardware from 1982 repurposed for the modern era. MeneerJansen wrote:So I connected my old Atari 2600 joystick to my C64 clone and playing games was just like old times. It was such a clunky, unresponsive mess that it playing games with any degree of competence nearly impossible, and felt a bit like trying to wrestle a big spoon out of a frozen tub of ice cream. Ultimately – and I appreciate this is a bit of a cop-out – how much you’ll love The C64 will probably depend on how much you love the original Commodore 64 (or ZX Spectrum or Amstrad CPC). For any noobs to the maxi then I can confirm that the PS3 controller works after pressing the ps Logo button - I’ve enjoyed playing it so far but now the PS3 controller has taken it to a new level - thanks everyone!

commodore 64 - Reading both keyboard and joystick with non commodore 64 - Reading both keyboard and joystick with non

I used to use the KERNAL SCNKEY routine earlier to read keyboard and it worked well with my joystick port 2 code. Really this means each paddle contains a “pot” (potentiometer), something found in a lot of electronics projects, and are used for dials, sliders, analog joysticks, etc. I expected though that it would support "any" HID USB game-pad or joystick class device -- but it seems there is a white-list on board. I *think* (but I'm probably wrong on this one), that Turrican II uses it, but don't hold me to that, because I tried playing it with a sega pad and it did seem to have the same effect as the spacebar, but it also crashed, so that's probably not a real example.

countermeasure dont like using a directional pad for 64 games too awkward you defo need a stick or a pad with an analogue nub or something, always hated the snes pad it sucked tramps balls imo, best pad ever is the ps4 duelshock feels awesome to hold and urinates on any xbox pad and I loved the 360 one but sony nailed it with the ds4,hope next firmware update enables proper support for it, p.
