About this deal

Not quite back to where she wants to be bit at least she can not get fired, not get dumped, not get made homeless - again.

I think that what Cassandra eventually does is interesting though and I wish it hadn’t taken so very long to get there.

If she does, it’s certainly unexpected: we’ve been sitting opposite each other since I got here and all I really know about her is that she’s twenty-two years old and likes tuna sandwiches, typing aggressively and picking her nose as if none of us have peripheral vision.

One of the most coveted designations in the book industry, the Kirkus Star marks books of exceptional merit. Earnest portrayals of neurodivergent protagonists are few and far between, and I appreciated that the story honestly depicted Cassie's challenges.A real beginning—the opening of something—when what you’re being offered is an arbitrary line in the sand. She briefly thinks about doing illegal things just because she can and then erasing them, but she is an honest person at heart so she discards the possibility. Honestly, I’m not sure if it’s such a disappointment because I was riding the high of my last book or if it’s just a bad book. I might be willing to give this author another try in the future if the right synopsis catches my eye again. It could have been the day my parents died in a car accident, which would have been considerably less so .

From my past reviews of things like Timeless, Terminator, and (most recently) Lost in Time, the regulars here will know that I have a soft spot for time travel stories. I don't want to go through a whole book and end up thinking, as Slappy says in an "Animaniacs" episode, "That was pointless. This morning, Will—my boyfriend of four months—kissed me, listed my virtues out of nowhere and concluded the pep talk by ending our relationship. I don’t know why they’re both under the impression I must have seen the end coming when I very much did not. It’s all very visible, to the point where her colleagues, family members and flatmates comment on it. But the relationship that she ultimately saves is a bit of a surprise and the most meaningful one in her life. We can appreciate the story for making some folks feel represented, while also acknowledging that it doesn't (and couldn't possibly) represent everyone. Geek Girl is the first book in a hilarious, internationally bestselling series that’s perfect for fans of Morgan Matson and Julie Buxbaum. I do recommend the audiobook narrated by Kristin Atherton, who did a fabulous job (but sounding older than 31 years, the protagonist’s age.
