About this deal

If you do decide to move forward with popcorn ceiling texture removal, you’ll want to begin with a scrape test. Popcorn ceiling removal tools are best for unpainted popcorn ceilings or for ceiling painted with flat paint. This way is MUCH easier, it’ll save your arm from going dead, it’s more likely to pull off some glue along with it and it will bring the polystyrene down in much larger chunks, making clean up a hell of a load easier too.

Your house is now massively less of a fire hazard and no longer looks like it just stepped out of the 70s! If it went wrong you could potentially contaminate EVERYTHING in the house, furniture, clothes, toys etc! Whether you’ve just moved into a home that has popcorn textured ceilings or you’re sick of looking at the one you’ve lived with for years, removing the texture is fairly easy so long as the plaster or drywall underneath is in good shape. Don’t be tempted to sand down the artex first as this can release asbestos particles and realise fibres that can become airborne and any inhalation can be damaging. No matter how careful you are with scraping off the several hundred blobs of glue – it’s inevitable that little flakes of plaster have also been removed along with it.

If you’re here, it’s probably because your house, or part of it, has been filled with dreaded polystyrene ceiling tiles. Seven years ago I was clueless and skill-less, but since then I've learnt how to build, tile, plumb and more. For all of these reasons—mess, time, skill level, asbestos—covering a ceiling is often easier than removing texture. We actually have a worx sonicrafter with the scraper attachment as well, don’t know why I didn’t think about using it, probably would have saved me a lot of arm ache, haha!

This method of decoration was widely popular in the UK between 1970’s - 1990’s and can be recognised in homes today. Since one edge of the plastic sheeting already has tape attached, you simply need to peel and stick the plastic right along the top of your walls. This coating is not harmful if left untouched, as Artex is usually located on the ceilings it poses no risk whilst left undisturbed. You will also receive a certification with your results, which would be perfect if you are trying to sell your house. As we have discussed the tools and safety equipment, it’s now time to look at the materials you will need to safely remove Artex from your walls or ceiling. With any DIY project you need to e equipped with the correct tools to ensure you are getting the best end result possible. Nice intro at the top of the page and what a great ‘How to’ guide you have written, it’s simple to follow, safety conscious, fun and the pictures show exactly what you have described. You could consider covering the area with plastic sheeting, as this sheeting traps air and forces the product down onto the surface. The tool has a broad metal blade, a lower frame with an attached plastic catch bag, and a threaded end for joining an extension pole. As the artex is classed as a textured surface you will need to use a roller with long hair such as a long sleeved mohair roller.

She loves writing about her travels, health, wellness, home decor, food and drink, fashion, beauty and scientific news. Ceiling texture removal is messy, so be sure to assemble the right tools to keep the process as stress-free as possible. Since taping knives cannot be attached to extension poles, you'll need to work entirely from a ladder.
