About this deal

It could be used for PHSE sessions but I have read it out loud to 3 different year 5 / 6 classes and they all got engrossed in the plot beyond the poetry. First allow children to talk about people, pets or experiences that they love or have loved; support their development of content, then help with vocabulary choices that will meet the syllable requirement of a Haiku. In 2005 Malorie was honoured with the Eleanor Farjeon Award in recognition of her distinguished contribution to the world of children’s books. We at Penguin Random House Australia acknowledge that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the Traditional Custodians and the first storytellers of the lands on which we live and work. In their independent activities, children will explore how and why the characters of Davey and Sam changed throughout the story.

I would love to read this to a class of children and see what their thoughts and feelings are on the different characters and the storyline. The only thing I can possibly say I dislike about this book is the fact that I will never get to experience reading it for the first time again. A touching story, written in verse, which celebrates friendship and individuality – from the award-winning author of Noughts and Crosses .Many scenes in the book lend themselves to exploration through dramatic reconstruction, or even just freeze-framing.

They will analyse both how and why Sam and Davey change throughout the book, and link this to the themes of bullying, friendship and conformity. The back-cover blurb sets us up with an immediate forewarning of loss: ‘He’s gone and it’s his fault’, but then the opening pages skip along in their depiction of a poetic class teacher and his resistant pupils. Davey and Sam should have gone to the park to go Cloud Busting together and become best friends again, this time not in secret.Sam learns that Davey has an allergy to dairy, and Davey tells him to keep it a secret to avoid a fuss. This will be useful to children who are developing their poetry techniques in English, by having relatable characters and different use of poetry. Perhaps children could create mini-dramas in which they portray how Sam might have responded to Alex.

Many scenes in the book lend themselves to exploration through dramatic reconstruction, or even just freezeframing. I wrated it a 3 because it was very easy and i didn't understand it at first but then i got the point of it. It had a lovely touch but seemed a bit unclear and slow at some points but other than that, a lovely read. A touching story, written in verse, which celebrates friendship and individuality – from the award-winning author of Noughts and Crosses.Once children have recapped and discussed how the revelation in chapter 8 in the last lesson has changed their perception of Sam, as a class they will read chapters 9-13 of 'Cloud Busting' by Malorie Blackman. Elliot wishes his Mum was more interesting: everyone else’s parents do exciting things like work for the BBC, but his is only a secretary.

I love the descriptions given to him as the story progresses and I feel these really allow you to imagine the world from his perspective and empathise with him, even when others do not. They're not perfect but they're still likable characters who are easy to relate to on some level—even if you don't identify with them 100%. I liked that the book was written like a poem - it is different from the other books that I usually read. We understand that not everyone can donate right now, but if you can afford to contribute, we promise it will be put to good use.We honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' continuous connection to Country, waters, skies and communities. Each of the six lessons in this Cloud Busting KS2 English Pack comes with a detailed plan, a set of engaging slides for the teaching input, differentiated activity ideas and printable resources. The simple vocabulary, including some ‘slang’ would serve well to distract poetry-averse readers from the fact that this story is an anthology of poems. Children will explore and discuss how different styles of poetry have been used to show the reader how Davey was bullied.
