About this deal

Early on Liam comes to the conclusion that his dad only speaks on five separate topics of conversation. Understand what it takes to live and work in a weightless environment and how they prepare for their extraordinary missions. It was a breath of fresh air, lightening my week, and some of the irreverence transferred to my own life - there's nothing better than the ability to laugh at the absurdities of our own lives.

He also wrote the brochure, [22] [24] the stadium announcements [22] and the media guide for presenter Huw Edwards. It’s this childlike faith that keeps reminding you that for all his posturing, Liam’s really just a kid like the rest of them. Still, the perks outweigh the disadvantages especially when – by pretending to be an adult AND a father (to his friend Florida Kirby) – Liam manages to win a competition to go to the world’s newest, most exciting theme park IN CHINA, The Infinite Park. Walker gave away thousands of copies in Liverpool - on buses, at ferry terminals, through schools, prisons and hospitals - to help promote the mighty Reader Organisation.

The friend and Liam take advantage of this and enter a Best Dad Ever contest, which promises to let them experience the best thrill rides ever. How Liam and the kids manage to save themselves makes for a story that’s filled with heart-stopping suspense, lots of humor, clever plotting, and a couple of great surprises. And Boyce is the master of funny (and always pertinent) chapter headings like “The Ice-Cream Man of the Gobi Desert”. With that small, understated sentence Boyce hooks us up with his twelve-year old narrator, Liam, a “great lad. As usual with Frank C-B it is full of comic set-pieces, that could be little short stories on their own.

Being shortlisted for the Guardian Prize gives you a particularly warm glow because it is awarded by a panel of your fellow authors. Say on his first day at a new secondary school as a “gifted and talented” student when he is initially identified as a teacher.

But the thing is, and I can’t stress this enough: Cosmic is less about how Liam ends up in Space and more about what it means to be an adult or a child and about unreasonable expectations and about ones too by exposing in a wonderful, funny and moving fashion the intricacies of the relationship between fathers and sons or daughters. They have a good solid appreciation of that feeling of awe and fear we have sometimes when we gaze up at the moon.In fact, I frequently found myself reading with a mental British accent, and a big smile on my face, because seriously. I would say my daughter would rate this as a 4 star overall as in most nights she was hoping for an additional chapter as she wanted to keep the story going.

The only problem is, he needs someone to be his child, to take along with him, because the competition is for a parent and child. It’s an hilarious journey of discovery as Liam hurtles around the world finding out exactly what makes children and adults different. The outlandish situation (two boys feverishly spending large amounts of money), the characterizations (particularly of the two boys and their father), the subtle handling of the big emotional and theological themes (of grief and faith), the laugh-out-loud humorous moments (my favorite being the playground economy), and the remarkable voice of narrator Damian (the younger of the two boys) made it a memorable novel for me as well as for my students when I read it aloud to them.

Other film directors Cottrell-Boyce has worked with include Danny Boyle ( Millions), Alex Cox ( Revengers Tragedy), Richard Laxton ( Grow Your Own) and Anand Tucker ( Hilary and Jackie). This book follows the story of a 12-year-old boy, Liam, who is often mistaken for an adult due to his height and facial hair.
