About this deal

I appreciate that there was a lot of thought to this section - not just some random stitch definitions tacked on at the end. I think that it is impossible to pick just one flower or plant because the possibilities are endless. As well as crochet and gardening, Chris enjoys walking, reading, knitting and yoga, and lives in North Yorkshire with her husband. The next sections share your basic crochet stitches, a few simple embroidery stitches, and finally other helpful techniques like attaching pieces, blocking and stiffening, making motifs, and the effects of using different yarns.

I looked through my stash of Size 10 and Size 3 cotton crochet thread and picked out all the colors I could find that matched Chris’ Flower Meadow Collage in the book. To answer your question, I did not use any starch – just blocked the motifs and laid them on the flat surface.

All of the motifs are inspired in some way by Chris' garden and the collages roughly follow the pattern of the seasons from the first flowers in spring, through to the frosty leaves of winter. Round 1: Working over the yarn tail, ([4 ch, 1 dtr, 2 ch, slst in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dtr, 4 ch, slst] in ring) 5 times.

The collage themes include Woodland Glade, inspired by a sun-dappled, shady forest corner with ferns and snowdrops, the Vintage Blue Bouquet collage is inspired by the shapes and soft pastel colours of Lily-of-the-valley and Scabious, and the Flower Meadow collage evokes a prairie-style meadow with ornamental grasses interspersed with tall perennial flowers. Each of the collages has a different, sometimes seasonal, theme and all the compositions are different – there are wreaths and bouquets, some are arranged in a jug or a vase while others grow straight from the ground. My favorite flower is the bleeding heart, but I really love them all, they all have such individual beauties and smells and bring so much to a garden! The bright, bold and happy colors of marigolds and geraniums are offset with cool blues and silvery blues in imaginative leafy stems.
