About this deal

Their journey with negative numbers begins in Year 4 place value where they count backwards through zero. Using a place value grid is already well documented, however, using whiteboard pens to show the structure of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing can be powerful. They can be used to support multiplication and division (for example using the counters to multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000).

They should recognise and describe linear number sequences (for example, 3, 3 ½ , 4, 4 ½ …), including those involving fractions and decimals, and find the term-to-term rule in words (for example, add ½ ). Our place value counters have been designed to be used with our plavalmat® place value mats that are durable, flexible and reusable alternatives to traditional printable or teacher-made resources in different designs for Years 2-6. Should this prove too difficult still, then breaking each numeral down into its component part should be done first e. This PowerPoint is a skeleton for the whole unit but teachers should add more with discussion and further examples.Ultimately, the end goal of all these manipulatives is for children to stop relying on them completely, moving onto using just a place value grid and then their own intuitive understanding; teachers will need to plan for this while taking individual needs into account. As this is only a guide to the progression in teaching KS2 place value, it is imperative that teachers (particularly those that teach Year 3)go back to the national curriculum objectives laid out for KS1 and ensure that students are able to meet those. Due to this Oakfield Learning has created the plavalmat® range of place value counters to be colour matched to those used by White Rose Maths and Power Maths which are two of the most popular and trusted schemes of learning used in primary, secondary schools and for home learning to support the maths mastery curriculum.

This caused some issues when students were then looking at measurements and teachers would remind pupils not to forget the units in the answer, an instruction which was often met with a bewildered look. I would also encourage pupils to bridge from 15 to 0 and then count backwards from ones to negative 15 to emphasise this point. If a smaller value comes before a larger value, then the smaller value is subtracted from the larger value e. The counters are custom made to our designs by our manufacturers in Belgium using sustainable methods. They can look at the counters in the ten-frame and draw them above to show how many of each colour they need. Children who do not understand that there is a limit to the value that can be represented using only tens and ones, will not understand this when dealing with more bases. The same would be repeated for subtraction and modelled consistently with pupils having the opportunity to try this. In key stage two, where keeping 5 and 10 frames may still be effective, counters may represent different values (such as one counter representing 5 or 10 etc).
