Towles has a wonderful way with setting - just as I loved Old New York in Rules, I loved Hollywood of the 1930's in this story.Really, though, and in fact, the ending for Eve was ambiguously ever after, those gardenias sometimes blowing rancid, sometimes sweet. Wrong though, since Eve’s a cultural heroine because of who she was, something only she could tell us.
