About this deal

Many of the pictures do little to elucidate or even relate to the definitions they are paired with, however. As someone who's relatively new to the lgbtq+ community, this was such a well structured and educational read. That honor belongs to ABC: A Family Alphabet Book , by Bobbie Combs, illustrated by Desiree Keane and Brian Rappa (Two Lives Publishing).

The illustrations are bright and cheery, if unexceptional, featuring a group of four friends with various skin tones and hair color playing together.I’ve also heard from some that they do think they’ve been brave—but as this is a point of contention, it would have been better avoided here. Let’s teach them about animal abuse, robbery, blowing up people and anything else an adult can do you do not like. Webb’s book also shares (part of) a title and theme with GAYBCs: A Queer Alphabet , by Rae Congdon (Greystone Books, 2018).

I founded Mombian in 2005 after noting a lack of sites with current, practical news and information for LGBTQ parents, or sites that looked at other aspects of LGBTQ culture with a parent’s eye. The one thing that I like about this book — picture and alphabet books — is their common structure for young people.The result would be GAYBCs ―a playful, subversive alphabet book that aims to spread awareness and demystify queer terminology for everyone. I won't get into the long history of us AAA folks being erased in favor of allies when folks talk about the LGBTQIA+ community—but you can read great pieces on that here and here. They will encounter it in their every day lives so it's best to open the door of conversation now to help small children grow up embracing others who are different than they are--also helpful for children who need to see other children who feel the way they do about their changing bodies and gender identity. If you need introductions to some of the basic terminology of the queer community, then this book will be somewhat helpful.

The topic will likely come up in discussion at some point later on when they're older, unless they've already been exposed to unsavoury and inappropriate behaviours, or, alternatively, they have gay parents (which may require some explanation and it's simple - sometimes people like people that have the same body parts). Additionally, all of the terms that relate to LGBTQ culture—“Drag,”“Kiki,”“Sashay,” and “Vogue”—relate only to one subculture of the LGBTQ community. At the end of the day, we are all human and just trying to be happy - so be kind, respectful, understand and support!Apparently, these lesbian mother-wanbabees prefer a Hitlerian approach to seeking stereotype children. Gay BCs,” authored and illustrated by Canadian designer Rae Congdon, is marketed as a “A cheeky, progressive adult alphabet book that celebrates and illuminates LGBTQ terminology. So we’re not just getting the trans story, we’re also getting characters that are nonbinary and who have different family structures. One other reviewer has also noted that “Asexual” or “Ace” might have been a better choice for “A,” given the range of other LGBTQ+ identities named in the book. There is a glossary at the end, which helps somewhat, but it doesn't define 100% of the terms, and some of them are just repeated from earlier in the book.
