The genius square game is a challenging brainteaser from Happy Puzzle Company, where the objective of the game is to complete the square with the different colored shapes. Each player takes one of the Genius Square Boards, the nine multicoloured geometric shapes, the six wooden pegs and the half dozen six sided dice. You never know what puzzle you are going to get as it all depends on the roll of the dice and where the blockers will be positioned. This puzzle game encourages sequencing, spatial awareness, speed of thought, strategic planning and visual perception. We even bought another whole Genius Square game just so that we could play with three or four people instead of just one or two.

As the game comes with 2 boards and pieces to fill both boards, it can be played as a solo game to challenge yourself or two players can race against each other to see who can finish the board in the quickest time (and it can be completed in as little as 30 seconds). Although this isn’t noted on the box, we find it’s usually a very fast game and only takes a few minutes. Overall, The Genius Square is an excellent brain-teasing logic game that uses a lot of different skill sets:Sequencing, Spatial Awareness, Speed of Thought, Strategic Planning, and Visual Perception. Games are over in a flash and while this opens the options up for ‘best of five’ or similar, it can get a bit repetitive if played too much in succession.

The Genius Square, unlike many puzzle games, comes with two sets of pieces so that two people can play competitively or collaboratively. The blockers and coloured polyomino shapes are made of wood and are a good size to easily grab, hold and place on the grid. You can play to beat your best time or challenge another player and see if you can beat your opponent (you can even combine your set with other players and play larger tournaments).
There are plenty of other activities that you can do as well and they don't have to cost you a lot of money. Educational toys should be age appropriate, otherwise they will not be helpful in developing skills or learning concepts.
