About this deal

We understand that not everyone can donate right now, but if you can afford to contribute, we promise it will be put to good use. Kicking a ball is also one of my favourites and I believe many children who do not feel as academic as their peers but like the outdoors and their sport maybe able to relate to this one. We build and maintain all our own systems, but we don’t charge for access, sell user information, or run ads.

Enabling children to relate to written language and poetic prose through amusing anecdotes of familiar school experiences is a great way to introduce children to a variety of writing styles, rhythm and rhyme. What makes this poem enjoyable to read however, is Ahlberg's creative use of language and imagery through metaphor.

This poetry book I feel allows children to really get a feel for the different ways of writing poems, as children can make connect too many of the poems through their own experiences at school. I think that this book could be used in a variety of different ways within a classroom to familiarise children with poetry. The end of each line rhymes in the format 'aabccb' and this adds to the repetition to create a feeling of frustration and going through the motions on the part of Billy.Web icon An illustration of a computer application window Wayback Machine Texts icon An illustration of an open book.

Similar to Please Mrs Butler - lots of use of rhyme, some 'silly' subjects that I think would still be enjoyable to children today. The excellent use of rhythm and rhyme mean this book would be a great introduction to poetry in year 4 and upwards classrooms.I particularly like Kicking A Ball which would certainly interest the football mad children in your class. The author’s notes are a useful accompaniment, especially if the book were to be used in the classroom. The poems are all different lengths which is good as they can be selected in regards to the time you have within the classroom.

The charming illustrations dotted around the pages help bring the poetry to life are a joy to look at.Whether it is the embarrassment of being unable to answer a question in class, being told off, or the euphoria of ‘Kicking a Ball’ in the playground, Ahlberg’s delivers a witty and emotive account of children’s experience of school that will appeal to a range of interests. Me and my class used to BEG our class teacher to read the poems from this book to us everyday when we were in school. From registration to home time and all the parts in between this is a humorous look at school life through the eyes of children. There are poems about lost scissors, the class hamster, making friends and falling out, the excitement of a stray dog in playground – and the infamous Derek Drew!
