Blackall also makes great use of different perspectives in her art, especially on the spreads relating to the birth of the lighthouse keeper's baby. Schoolwide, classroom, family, and community leadership events provide authentic environments to celebrate leadership, build culture, and allow students to practice leadership skills. We see the loneliness and the boredom, but also the excitement and danger that comes with the position. I love picture books, I think they are for all ages, but I also love the sea, the smell of the sea, the coast (although I don't like busy beaches) and its beautiful lighthouses.I’d had this on my list and when I found out it won the Caldecott Medal I made a point of getting to it. I love how, at the end of the book, there is a TON of info about lighthouses that can be used as a teaching guide. I can’t say enough about the stunning, detailed Chinese ink and watercolor illustrations by Caldecott Medalist Sophie Blackall, especially those of the sea and the lighthouse.
