About this deal

This is because they reduce the intensity of bright image highlights, leaving you with fewer distractions from the grey mush elsewhere. Its trio of HDMIs do, though, unexpectedly handle variable refresh rates (up to 60Hz) and non HDR 1080p at 120Hz – despite the screen only using a 60Hz panel. It quickly becomes apparent, though, that the black level problems are so fundamental to the 55A7GQ’s image characteristics that nothing in the picture menus really helps. For movie fans, choosing a 50-inch TV ensures that you can enjoy the latest content just as the Director intended. According to the spec sheet, there’s no difference between the Hisense Roku R50A7200GTUK and its 2020 predecessor, but their two sonic presentations are like chalk and cheese.

There’s VIDAA Free, which rounds up a selection of free content from the likes of Plex, Vevo, YouTube and Facebook Watch for more options. This cookie is used for internal Bazaarvoice web analytics to be correlated to the same user browsing session for interactions across the Bazaarvoice network. The idea is that every TV should have at least one picture preset which can display TV and film content as it was mastered and intended to be seen. Other inputs include a pair of USB ports, an optical digital audio output, an Ethernet network port and a headphone jack, along with the now inevitable Wi-Fi support.

The rear legs of the stand do provide cable management so you can run cables out of sight from the front of the TV.Moving to actual viewing material and we found the image quality and accuracy to be very good on the U7QF. As a living room workhorse, the Hisense would be an excellent choice with an image that looks natural and accurate when set up correctly. Even watching BBC News in SD, the picture is remarkably sharp and stable for a panel this size, even if the colours are more simplistic. Moving to HDR and again the Hisense surprises with a nice degree of dynamic range and good backlight control in normal living room conditions. Hisense makes use of a variety of different smart TV platforms, depending on the set you’re watching, including the third-party Roku and Android TV platforms.

Blacks are deep when viewed straight on with only the odd instance of crush in difficult mixed scenes. Experience shows that while IPS screens can provide wider effective viewing angles, they tend to struggle to deliver good black levels and contrast. The lack of absolute contrast is more obvious when viewing in dim surroundings and black crush is also more noticeable with tricky scenes, like the opening of John Wick: Chapter 3, where backgrounds lose shadow detail in the darker parts of the image.

The bezel is discreet enough to not intrude on the TV viewing experience, and the depth of the set is just 78mm without the stand, making it appreciatively slim in appearance. When the X-Wings come to the rescue and chase off the Empire, the rousing score still manages to excite. This is likely a function of Hisense’s promising decision to use a direct LED backlight, though, so it’s not something we’re inclined to complain about.

The A7G is a solid effort from Hisense, supporting a range of gaming and movie features for those looking for a big-screen telly that doesn’t break the bank, but backlight issues hamper its overall value.Local Dimming High is the default setting used and introduces some aggressive dimming to some scenes. While TV panel production is unlikely to be quite so affected by the weather, the Hisense Roku R50A7200GTUK proves that just because you use the same materials and method as last year’s excellent vintage, it doesn’t mean the results will be the same. I found the sound quality to be useable for everyday TV viewing in a living room but it lacks any large soundstage or weight for movie soundtracks. It also uses a full-array direct LED backlight with quantum dot technology and has 72 independent dimming zones.
