About this deal

Generally, to use a hole puncher, a piece of leather that is to be punched is placed on a nylon surface, on top of a hard, sturdy surface (such as granite). It was originally used to allow water to flow out of the shoe in primitively constructed ghillie shoes. It can be helpful to decide on the leather punch set to ultimately own, then purchase it it full out, or individually punch by punch. Corner punches are available in different sizes so one can be found that matches the crafter’s need. Secure the punch in the drill, then press downward through the leather while very gently squeezing the trigger or running the press at a low RPM.

A rotary leather punch machine is a table-mounted machine that helps punch holes into leather material. Others are handles with interchangeable punch size tips, requiring less storage space, though some additional time to change tips between sizes. The handles are then squeezed together, pushing the punch tip down into the selected hole size, and a hole is cut into the leather.

For leather cutting machines, the size of the hole is selected and positioning lined up, then a level pulled to actuate the punch mechanism, pushing it into the leather. They are not as popular or expensive as KS Blade or Sinabroks but they have sharp tools and they provide good value for the money. Pricking irons enable the crafter to create diagonal stitches and they look very good when done correctly. Punching leather is a core skill in leathercraft and is done to produce holes, cut edges, cut patterns, and set hardware. You need to use a fine tip to drill bit and be extremely careful to not damage the leather during the process.

Also, there are many sets that include punches for various shapes such as squares, rectangles, or irregular shapes. The solid end us used for hitting with a hammer, mallet, or maul to generate the force that drives the punch through the leather. It’s also very important that a thick cutting mat/board is used to protect both the hard surface and, more importantly, the cutting edge of the punch. Button holes can be made using a standard round drive punch, then cutting a slit below it with a knife. Drill bits can be used for this, generally aiming to use smaller bits at faster speeds, then increasing the bit size to make the hole larger, removing a bit more of the material each time until the hole is the size that is needed. They work by rotating the turret to select the side punch to use, placing the leather material between the punch and cutting surface, then squeezing the grips closed by hand. If you find yourself doing high-volume production or repetitive hole punching work for, this could be a useful tool. An oblong punch can be cheated by punching two small holes a short distance apart and then using a knife to cut out the leather between the holes. It’s important to use a plastic/rubber/rawhide/wood mallet because a metal hammer will quickly mushroom the striking end of the punch. Unlike fabrics, leather is a very strong material and the needles used for hand stitching leather have dull tips (to protect the leather from getting scratched and also to protect the leathercrafters’ fingers).

They’re easy to use if you have decent grip strength but might be more difficult to use with age or limited dexterity. This punch allows a very uniform and pleasing pattern to be easily laid out without having to individually punch dozens or even hundreds of holes one at a time. Drive punches have the versatility of punching a hole anywhere on a piece of leather of any thickness. Just place the cutter on the leather, hit it with a hammer, maul, or mallet, and the rosette is cut. A round drive punch is set onto the leather it will cut, then hit or “driven” with a hammer, mallet, or maul.Generally, the based are sharpened edges around a hollow metal cylinder, perfect for creating a circular hole. Ventilator punches make it easy to punch multiple small, grouped holes in leather goods where air flow can be helpful.

Similar to belts, straps used on a bag or long wallet often require you to finish the end of the strap into a specific shape. You can sharpen a hole in a leather punch using some fine sandpaper, or a dedicated tool sharpening stone. If you find yourself doing high-volume or repetitive round hole punching, this could be a useful tool. But overall you need to be careful with other tools and the holes won’t be as clean as can be done with a punching tool. The softer nylon surface protects the punch blade from damage, and the granite absorbs much of the force.Drive punches have the versatility of being able to punch a hole anywhere on a piece of leather of any thickness. If you are making belts or straps, oblong leather punches can save you a lot of time while installing the buckle.
