About this deal

One day he takes a photo he shouldn't have taken of a person who couldn't possibly be and his whole world begins to unravel.

Aside from Ash himself and a minority of other characters who are nice, you look forward to watching these people die horribly – a genuine guilty pleasure. Who - or what - is the reclusive hooded figure that Ash has seen from the window walking across the courtyard in the dead of night? The plotting is often convenient: at one point Ash’s business partner Kate suddenly goes for dinner with an old childhood friend who happens to now be a high-ranking police officer, who relates to Kate a torrent of highly sensitive state secrets.

The Jonah is in large part the story of a police investigation, albeit by a policeman whose life is overshadowed by a supernatural presence.Herbert had previously tackled the theme of reincarnation in his fourth novel, Fluke, the fantasy story of a dog who somehow remembers his previous life as a human being. I felt as though there was not much action, with things moving at a much slower pace than I would have liked, therefore leaving me to give it the three rather than the four stars. The ghost story appears entirely incidental, having little purpose other than as motivation to get Ash to the castle in the first place. The odd occasions when the third person narrator breaks through the 4th wall did not overly bother me (even if it interrupted the flow of the story to some extent). He left school at 15 and studied at Hornsey College of Art, joining the art department of John Collings, a small advertising agency.

In the meantime, a small girl and her dog get killed by a group of giant rats, which were helped by the smaller ones. The site often has options for various book covers and even gift cards if you're thinking of giving Herbert's books as a present. This novel opens with the dying thoughts of Princess Diana, which is considerate in a way, as it sets the bar for tastelessness good and early. Herbert's work stands out in the genres of horror and fantasy due to his unique combination of these elements with mystery, romance, and thriller themes.

As the inhabitants of Comraich are revealed – war criminals, murderers, child molesters, all of whom have escaped justice simply by being unfeasibly rich – the reader starts to anticipate the inevitable descent into chaos when the spirits are unleashed. I really loved the strong characters in this book, who grab the readers attention from the beginning and a broader spectrum of characters you couldn't wish to meet, from the ethereal to the down-right psychotic.Honestly, most of the time I had no idea what was happening, where it was going, what it was trying to set up. His troubles start when he does what he is paid to do - he takes a candid photo of someone in an embarrassing situation. Ash is Herbert’s first novel since 2006’s The Secret Of Crickley Hall , a fairly traditional haunted house tale which could have taken place any time in the last hundred years with minimal revisions. For one thing, Creed showcases Herbert's writing so well, it's a lighter book than his norm in terms of horror, but it has all the signature Herbert's strengths, well developed backstory, interesting (if not particularly likable or traditionally good)characters, action, sex that's actually plot driven, humor (this book in particular) and a boombastic finale.
