About this deal

Palate: Oily and subtly spicy at first, before notes of earthy vanilla pod and chocolate-covered raisins develop. It had a rather rough oiliness to the body that reminded me of Glenfiddich (probably my least favourite single malt), and the aftertaste seemed to vanish before I had time to access it. Nose: slightly oily, salty little bit of caramel, a very floral honey and I can’t get the thought of smoked fish out of my head.

I'm also hoping that it will develop a bit, as the bottle of Superstition I bought a while back was pants when I first opened it, but opened up amazingly over the course of a week. Isle of Jura 10 year old turned out to be a steady executor that presents itself smoothly all the way from the start until the very end. After a few more sips, I would place it a little higher than that unpleasant Speyside, but not significantly.Like stated above, it’s a NAS offering (so probably lots of young spirit), and bottled at 40% and probably chill-filtered.

You can't really compare this single malt to some of the delights produced by some of the Islay distilleries but it stands up as a pleasant whisky. I can best describe this smell as some combination of moist hay, sneakers, vegetable broth, or apricot. But new or old, this is still an unmistakable Jura whisky with the lactic vanilla and the wood notes (love it or hate it). I found the nose to be somewhat earty and buttery, with a tad of salt, but also soft grain and pine wood. It has the subtle smoke characteristic of Jura's excellent Island single malts, with robust vanilla and an intense kick of sherried sweetness underneath.

If I bought a new bottle of it I would be prepared to leave the bottle open a long time before it would be ready for me. This new 10 year old single malt from Jura (located on the eponymous island next door to Islay) is all three. Neat the arrival is light and silky, really well balanced with a distinct three-phased experience: Light heather and caramel, followed by white pepper, smoke and then a leather and sort of flinty finish.

While the four previous whiskies sought to cover points on the spectrum of delicate to heavy and peated to unpeated, “Jura 10 marries together the best of both” peated and unpeated malts, according an announcement of Jura 10 posted last month.

Regretting not getting my usual Highland Park now - but will finish the bottle, which is more than I would do with Glenfiddich! Augustine Double Cask Bourbon hails from the land of alligators, retirees, spring break, orange juice and headline punchlines - Florida. Part of the new core range of whiskies launched by Isle of Jura in early 2018, this 10 year old expression takes the place of Jura Origin.
