Compared side-by-side to the original, it’s less bitter, more delicate almost, and definitely sweeter with the orange peel coming through. The Lakes Distillery produces some brilliant blends, combining its own single malt with wonderful whiskies from across the British Isles. Named Iris, whisky maker Dhavall Gandhi was inspired by a town in the western Himalayas, Gulmarg, which translates as 'meadow of flowers'. With The Lakes Gin as the cornerstone in our liqueurs range, we infuse our unique botanical blend in the finest British wheat spirit and the purest water drawn from our Lake District National Park home in a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It's another excellent release in the Whiskymaker's Editions series from The Lakes, which sees whiskymaker Dhavall Gandhi explore exciting flavour profiles that differ from The Lakes' sherry-cask-forward house style. This is quite a deviation on the original recipe which contained botanicals such as bilberry, heather, hawthorn and mint, many of them foraged from the local area. I’d highly recommend a visit – as well as tours, there’s also a visitor centre, bistro and the pièce de résistance, the alpacas!

A cool feature of the Lakes Distillery is that their descending lyne arms from the stills can send spirit vapours into two different shell and tube condensers, one made of stainless steel and one made of copper, depending on the style of spirit they want to create. The Lakes Salted Caramel Vodka Liqueur - A pinch of salt enhances the deliciously indulgent caramel in this alluring liqueur with The Lakes Vodka at its heart. Using the Lakes Gin as its base, this combines those classic flavours of crisp juniper and fresh citrus, with delicate floral notes of elderflower. In December 2016, Dhavall Ghandi joined the team as whisky master, bringing immense knowledge from studying centuries of whisky heritage, while also remaining open to a world of new inspiration.

Elements is the first Whiskymaker's Project from the Lakes Distillery, designed as a library of whisky learnings to offer people a view into the journey whisky makers go on to create a new single malt. Colheita Port is made using the grapes from a single harvest, and notes of delicate fruits and warming spices certainly shine here.
