About this deal

Her stories continue to delight and move me, and Letters from the Lighthouse does not disappoint at all. Queenie, who runs the post office in Budmouth Point, and Ephraim, the lighthouse keeper are hiding a secret.

I would definitely recommend this for UKS2 to really get to the heart of some really challenging and emotive issues. She made me feel bad for Olive, but not only for her, for all people and families that suffered throughout WWII. By shining a spotlight on supplementary characters’ preconceptions and showing their progression towards change and acceptance, my class were able to connect with the injustices faced by refugees, both in the past and the present, on a far deeper level.

While in Devon, Olive begins to unravel the mystery and finds out that her sister is more connected to Devon than she realized.

When Olive is caught in an air raid, her mum decides that it is time her children were evacuated out of London and she is sent, with her brother, Cliff, to live in a small coastal village in Devon. Emma Carroll explains all of the characters in great depth and each character is unique in some sort of way. Suitable for children working towards/at the expected standard in Y5/6, the questions are closely linked to the National Curriculum and therefore adequately develop their comprehension skills. By providing a contextual explanation rather than just a standard definition, we can better help children understand the stories we are sharing with them and widen their vocabulary. My favourite scene is when Esther and Olive go into the school and everyone unpicked the stars that had Jew in German on them. The story serves as a poignant and timely reminder that understanding, respect and compassion can defeat prejudice and bigotry. In this heart-stopping adventure, Benjamin Zephaniah shows us what it was like to be a child of the Windrush generation. Scrisori din far” este o istorie de viață de care te îndrăgostești încă de la prima pagină și pe care ajungi să o porți în suflet mult timp după ce închizi ultima filă. James thinks back to his memories of childhood, and recollects his childhood vision of the Lighthouse as something “silvery, misty-looking…with a yellow eye.

Emma Caroll ne poartă pașii până în anul 1941, când Londra pare a fi în flăcări, căci nemții aruncă peste ea bombe peste bombe. It seemed extremely realistic, so realistic I thought I was the character Olive and I would recommend it to someone who gets bored quickly because it has a lot of drama in it from the first few pages. Louie, who was abandoned at Chipchase's Travelling Circus as a baby, dreams of becoming a 'Showstopper', but Mr Chipchase keeps her hidden, tucked away in the ticket booth. Her older sister, Sukie, went missing in an air raid, and she's desperate to discover what happened to her.I particularly liked the character Sukie and I like the part where the bomb goes off while they are at the cinema. Either choice you make has no reflection on rewards, so simply choose whichever option you feel is right. It must have been really hard to leave your family, go to a different country and try to speak a new language. Well what can I say Emma Carroll has brought an enlightened and heart wrenching version of events during WW2 with the poignancy of Good Night Mr Tom and the sad reality of the plight of Jewish refugees trying to flee to the UK.
