About this deal

Herbie says, “I need to get some work done, or Mollusc will have me stewed and served up as today’s special. The author occasionally uses advanced vocabulary, but the context clues provided make Malamander a good option for children looking to learn new words. It’s a bit of a blur, there’s a long ‘Post-it Note phase’, and a lot of pacing around on the beach, fretting.

There's lots of suspense and scariness from heroes in danger from both real-world and fantasy creatures. Do you remember how you felt when you saw the beautiful front cover by George Ermos for the first time? I would recommend this book to anyone that loves adventure and wants to discover the impossible, and for anyone who is willing to go that one step further when everything in your body tells you to stop.

She is new to the island, as is the audience, allowing readers to identify with Violet as they learn about the stories which the townspeople know well. I’ve often lived near to the sea, but it was coming to live in a seaside town – and being there all year round – that inspired Eerie-on-Sea. Eerie-on-Sea a strange and mysterious place, which nobody visits in winter when storms rage and monstrous creatures creep.

Following this, he pursued a career in picture books, mostly from France where he lived for many years. The legends– and the people who tell them– are enthralling, and each person is essential to the story being told.

This delightfully spooky fantasy series opener for big kids and tweens drips with charm and chills, thanks to sprinklings of magic, humor, and mystery along with a dash of steampunk. Author Thomas Taylor's entertaining use of language, especially when it comes to people and place names; his sly sense of humor; and chapters with cliffhanger endings make it a great choice to read aloud. Your class will explore the similes throughout the Malamander book and explain what the author is trying to get across. But I don’t believe it would be possible to plan everything in advance, and I do believe it’s important to allow plenty of space for surprising things to happen.

Malamander is a brilliantly plotted mystery swirling with secrets, myths and the enigmatic residents of one unforgettable sea-side town. The malamander’s egg is central to many of the characters’ motivations, and Taylor’s story touches on the harmful nature of greed that has lasting effects it can have on others.
