About this deal

He does not seem to have crossed a bridge at any point but worked his way along a street, reaching a church and graveyard. This second book is purged of the chapters recounting 'personal experiences' which McVicar claims were the product of poetic license for the most part. It's quite fascinating to hear firsthand both why someone would choose a life of crime and later leave it behind. Roadblocks were set up that caused tailbacks stretching towards Sunderland but McVicar was wellaway from the roads.

It is an interesting enough glimpse into the milieu of british jail life in the early 1970s, but really slows down the pace and, at times, almost feels like reading non-fiction. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. He also fell out with former criminal friends when, in response to the 1990 riot in Strangeways, he suggested that the SAS be sent in to deal with the inmates. The unanswered question is, did Lewis get a chance to read McVicar’s manuscript while it was doing the rounds of agents and publishers, and essentially plagiarise it for his novel? Heslop, a serving soldier, was awaiting trial at the Quarter sessions of the Assize Court (now Crown Court) and jumped down from the roof of this very court during his escape. In the pop charts, Radio 1 was giving plenty of air time to a future number one hit single, Joe Cocker’s With A Little Help From My Friends. He mentions what he thought to be a bowling alley with crowds of youngsters (perhaps what was then the ice rink). In Durham Prison, meanwhile, one of Britain’s most dangerous criminals was preparing to attempt the impossible and escape from the jail’s high-security E Wing. McVicar by Himself", one of the classics in the prison book genre, was first published in 1974 when the author was serving a 26 year jail sentence for armed robbery. I found myself plowing through ideas that took several pages to describe, and then rephrasing them in a couple of sentences in my head.

Despite being spotted by a number of local people, he evaded capture by police swarming around the area. John McVicar, who has died aged 82 of a heart attack, was a former armed robber who famously escaped from Durham prison in 1968 and became the subject of a film starring Roger Daltrey of the Who. Most of the real-life characters in the film have fictitious names and some events and characters are fictionalised. It includes hetherto unpublished anecdotes about Britain's most savage criminals of the '60's - the Torture Gang boss Charlie Richardson, his macabre hireling "Mad" Frankie Fraser, even Moors murderer Ian Brady and others who were imprisoned in Durham's infamous E-Wing at the time. On his release he became a journalist, writing for the Sunday Times, the Guardian, Punch, the New Statesman, Time Out and Spiked. I was intrigued by his self-rehabilitation and some surprising views of his (he's quite against prison reforms), so I picked up this book.

Whilst on the run, McVicar attempted to rob an armoured security van, was recaptured, charged with more offences and sentenced to another 15 years in prison consecutive to the eight he was already serving. Twenty-eight-year-old John McVicar was holed up in Durham’s fortress-like E Wing with some of the country’s toughest lags. His first arrest came in 1956 when he was sent to a remand home in Essex and took part in his first escape. It was to inspire Roger Daltrey of The Who to make the film "McVicar" (1980), which in turn influenced Stephen King's story of the Shawshank Redemption (1982) that itself led to the eponymous movie.
