It's final nod to a core theme in the third film was also a nice tie-in, directly linking the events in the third, fourth, fifth and - soon - sixth films in a way which worked so wonderfully for the Fast and Furious franchise in terms of pure fan service, and which will hopefully pay dividends with Fallout. This mostly works, but it's still not quite perfect - when it really should be - and even the peak whites struggle in some of the scenes to avoid being fully overblown. Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation: Loaded with "jaw-dropping stunts", prepare for "the best action movie of the year". Perhaps missing a Commentary from De Palma (however unlikely that may have been) or at least Cruise, it's an otherwise pretty decent selection.In fact, action sequences are even the result of these choices — a constant cause and effect dilemma. There are simply too many standout moment to note, from the stunning blue sky in the background once Cruise reaches the top of his climb to the green hues of the lab work; from the striking desert sunsets to the fireball explosions that blossom out spectacularly.

The colours here are superb, rendered with depth and vibrance that gives the feature a new lease of life (the opening pre-credits sequence and title sequence are blisteringly punchy), positively bringing it into the modern playing field alongside its later sequels, with rich blood and lipstick reds the most prominent in the palette, but colours refined across the whole spectrum, noting lush greens in the reception and prominent blues on little touches like the lighting and the moonlight on the riverfront, and refining dominant mahogany browns.It uses 10-bit video depth, a Wide Colour Gamut (WCG) and High Dynamic Range (HDR), as well as Dolby Vision, and is encoded using the HEVC (H. Fallout doesn’t merely bound from one spectacular - and spectacularly tense - set piece to the next, instead fluidly injecting a plentiful bevy of them into the complex narrative of this stunning direct sequel to Rogue Nation, delivering two and a half hours of nail-biting tension and jaw-dropping thrills, which leaves you utterly exhausted by the end of it. Effects are superbly observed, from the smaller tech-derived bleeps which are finely picked up, to the heady ambience in some of the more atmospheric locales, to the louder moments – which include oppressive sandstorms, thunderous explosions and penetrating gunfire.

Disavowed IMF agents fight the state-of-the-art espionage world of Ultra HD with mostly excellent and highly-satisfying HEVC H. Here, as is the trend with this UK box set, we miss out on the second disc, with nothing but the Audio Commentary on the 4K disc itself, and then only the first Blu-ray disc which contains the first half of the extra features, including some 7 Featurettes. We reviewed the UK Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Mission: Impossible - Fallout on a LG 55B7 Dolby Vision 4K Ultra HD OLED TV with an LG UP970 Dolby Vision 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player.It's all stunningly relayed here, besting the already outstanding lossless upgrade on the first movie and hitting reference standards; certainly this is the best the movie has ever looked or sounded before. Cruise continues to go above and beyond, showing a commitment to the series which reminds audiences that this is Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible, and all the better for it. The 1996 original Mission: Impossible comes to the UK as part of a 5-film franchise box set released by Paramount just in time for the upcoming Mission: Impossible - Fallout.
