About this deal

With moth orchids, once all the flowers have fallen, cut off the stem just above a visible joint (node). In Europe we can find evidence that the Greeks, in the pre-Roman period, knew about and studied wild orchids. Dendrobium orchids do best with a temperature of at least 16-18°C (61-65°F) and less humid environment than many other orchids. Some orchids will go into a 'rest' or dormant period when they stop showing any signs of active growth and may even lose the odd leaf. They should not be confused with parasitic plants which actively draw nourishment from the tree or plant on which they are found; epiphytes simply use the host as a means of support.

In most centrally heated homes the air is dry, so mist the foliage every two to three days using tepid water, but avoid spraying the flowers, as the petals can be marked by water. For moth orchids and others that need bright but indirect light, an east- or west-facing windowsill is perfect. Please be aware that orchids are a huge and very diverse family of plants and individual plant labels will specify your plants special requirements. You can expect a Moth Orchid to flower about once a year so, as the flowers can last up to 6 months, you will have a beautiful spray of orchids nearly all the time. Scale insects can be found on the leaf surfaces (above and below) and flower stalks, while mealybugs prefer new leaves.

The stories of these courageous ‘Plant Hunters’ make exciting reading and I strongly recommend The Plant Hunters by Toby Musgrave, Chris Gardener and Will Musgrave first published as a paperback in 1999 by Seven Dials (ISBN 1-84188-001-9). These include Dendrobium orchids, Paphiopedilum orchids, Oncidium orchids, Vanda orchids and Cambria hybrid orchids. Epiphytic orchids are found in rainforests and grow on the branches and trunks of trees, which they use as ‘perches’, thus escaping from the competition of all the other plants to be found on the forest floor. You should also note that the picture images show only our serving suggestions of how to prepare your food - all table accessories and additional items and/or ingredients pictured with the product you are purchasing are not included. Replant in the same pot with fresh orchid compost or choose a slightly larger pot if the plant won’t fit.

However, after two or three years it’s worth taking them out of their pots and removing as much of the compost as possible. Unlike most other pot plants, orchids don’t need regular re-potting and often thrive when root-bound. Unlike most orchids, Odontoglossum orchids do well in low light levels - a north-facing windowsill is ideal.

How to care for orchids - BBC Gardeners World Magazine

Different types of orchid need slightly different care, so it can be useful to keep the plant label after purchase. Once it has stopped flowering, cut the flower stem down to about half an inch in height and continue in exactly the same way and, guess what? Follow the links below for details of how to create an orchid-friendly environment for the most popular pot plant orchids. After that, all you have to do is water the plant once a week by immersing the whole pot in water for several hours – or overnight. Establishing a date when man first found and cultivated wild orchids is difficult but it is widely believed that the Japanese and Chinese were the first to grow them, around three thousand years ago.Today, wild orchids still grow and flower in large numbers throughout the Mediterranean region, starting in February and continuing right through to the start of the hot, dry summer around the end of May. Many wealthy individuals sponsored trips to all manner of remote and dangerous places so that they could be the first to show off an exotic new discovery in their glasshouses or gardens. An epiphytic orchid, in particular, is really just ‘perched’ perilously on the top of the compost in the pot, and so it will easily fall out if tilted.
