Bear, and for her series of spooky middle-grade fantasies about the Strega-Borgia family, which began with Pure Dead Magic - also happens to be the author of my all-time favorite reassurance tale, No Matter What. This makes the story fit with any kind of parent/child or grandparent/child or relative/child or grown-up/child pairing you might have upon reading it. It’s the narrator’s light-hearted request for their choice of funeral music because they’d “be happier to see those present have some relief. It’s better to continue the good work that the person started in life as a source of comfort instead. Life is often described as a journey and funerals are a time to reflect on this, making this passage from The Lord of the Rings a popular choice for funerals, particularly non-denominational or humanist ceremonies.

He saw little figures on the ground fleeing from the large green projectile that was speeding their way. I also really like the idea that the two characters are merely a small character and a larger one, the relationship could be any number of things, small and their: mother, father, older sibling, cousin, grandparent, friend or foster parent/ carer. With non-religious and Humanist funerals becoming more and more popular, many people turn to the internet and books to find the perfect non-religious reading.

Having never met Giraffe, the kittens are at first curious and then increasingly alarmed as they hear from their friends about Giraffe’s oddness, from his long neck and spots to his height. While No Matter What is a classic parent/child love story, it’s the last two pages (about love existing no matter what) which choke me up, night after night. You can hope your family will examine the evidence and satisfy themselves that the science is sound and that they’ll be comforted to know your energy’s still around. I didn't see this as a grief/death thing at all, instead I interpreted it as a "someone's moved away" scenario. The poem focuses on the belief that our loved ones are all around us, with no religious messaging or undertones.I would also use this cross-curricular in art where we can take inspiration from the illustrations of the book. The stars feature heavily in the illustrations too remind those who have read it before how stars are always there, just sometimes we can’t see them.
