About this deal

Fast-action and complex game scenes are stable and stutter-free with AMD FreeSync Premium Pro for your competitive edge. Even with overdrive maxxed out, the Samsung Odyssey G7 C27G7 suffers from little to no pixel overshoot. But it is all a reminder, not only of the ultimate limitations of LCD technology, but also the care needed when making assumptions, both for better and worse.

The HDR support isn't as good as you'd find on a Samsung TV, but it does noticeably well with effective selective dimming. With its 1ms GTG response time (unusually fast for a VA panel), and 240Hz refresh rate, there’s absolutely no smearing or blurring to be seen at all. In fact, you'd be forgiven for mistaking it with an IPS panel given how good the colors and vibrancy are. It also has one of the deepest curves we’ve ever seen in a monitor at 1000R, which Samsung says matches the curvature of the human eye.

In games this results in an incredible sense of immersion due to being almost enveloped by the display, especially in titles like Subnautica or Elite Dangerous. The Odyssey’s VA panel has a matte finish, which all but eliminates the worst glare and, in normal use without the fancy HDR mode enabled, it delivers excellent image quality. The Odyssey G7 tops out at a 240 Hz refresh rate, which makes it equal to many other monitors on paper. Samsung TV Plus offers free live content with no downloads or sign-ups, as well as personalised content recommendations from Universal Guide. Whether you'd actually notice the difference is an open question, but you'll have the peace of mind knowing that if you're hitting up to 240fps in your favorite game then your monitor is keeping up.

This appears to be a fairly common issue with the Samsung Odyssey range, but it was quickly corrected by heading into the VOD and playing around with the Black Equalizer – between 13 and 16 seems to be the sweet spot. Samsung’s excellent contrast and accurately saturated color enhanced the image details, like textures. The styling continues around back with an array of smoothly flowing lines that accentuate the panels curvature. The VA panel combines deep blacks with vivid colors, especially with the addition of Samsung’s quantum dot tech. The monitor’s black and white levels were on point in Lagom’s test patterns, with the darkest and brightest squares being just barely indistinguishable from reference black and white, respectively. We’re not sure when one would use a 1000R curved monitor in portrait mode, but if you think of a reason, this is one of the only such screens that can do it. At this size, the action is super in-your-face, filling up your field of view and making all other monitors seem paltry in comparison.

Factor in buttery smooth 240Hz refresh and adaptive sync and, well, this is one heck of a gaming panel. However, many users have reported flickering with their Odyssey monitors when adaptive refresh is turned on. I sincerly doubt that particular BenQ monitor features a VA panel that can keep up with this latest VA panel from Samsung, that currently wears "the crown", when it comes to pixel respons times in monitors of this size. She has been interviewed as an industry expert for the BBC, and while her educational background was in prosthetics and model-making, her true love is in tech and she has built numerous desktop computers over the last 10 years for gaming and content creation.

The incredibly-low 2ms input lag brings never-before-experienced response accuracy to catch notoriously-agile enemies. Still, for pure gaming, a slightly less sharp picture is probably a worthy sacrifice for a screen this big and this smooth. DisplayPort properly defaults to PC level, but the HDMI input defaults to video, which means dynamic range is reduced.
