About this deal

And reduces my own pleasure in the reading, which should be great--I adore Pullman and this world of his. Lee Scoresby, a 24-year-old young Texan aeronaut, and his dæmon, the jackrabbit Hester, make a rough landing in Novy Odense, a harbour town on an island in the White Sea, in Muscovy. The layout of the hardbound novella is certainly a throwback to the past, with the story told in text, drawings and other resources. It tells of old rivalries and a conspiracy that Lee has to fight and although we already know the ending to this story, it is very fast-paced and thrilling. Lee shoots him in the chest, declares this revenge for what happened to Jimmy Partlett, and then shoots him dead.

It's very short, but it tells a fulfilling and engaging story, with a lot of really nice moments for the various characters. A spectacular crash-landing in the Arctic port of Novy Odense drops him straight into the middle of a confrontation between a bullying mining company and a Dutch sea-captain. The narrative follows the exploits of the young Aeronaut Lee Scoresby whom is just starting out in the balloon trade and gets caught up in a quarrel between two warring factions of a Northern Arctic town. Fine in a fine dustwrapper (as new) with all the first issue points, together with the Alethiometer and the Scholastic Promotional Card ("The Story is Complete"), signed by the author on the title page ("Philip Pullman - Oxford"). It's so annoying that characters in books always understand and remember names perfectly, which is so inconsistent with reality.

It’s nice, and a rare thing, to find a book that can be read in one sitting and leave you with a smile when you are finished. Once Upon a Time in the North is a lovely story, and the title suggests a homage to Sergio Leone's Once Upon A Time in the West. Book is bound in dark blue cloth; This prequel to His Dark Materials takes place when Lee Scoresby is just 24 years old. Two pages from The Elements of Aerial Navigation, a book that Lee won with the balloon and which he uses to help him fly.

The presentation is faultless, the size, the illustrations, the board game and of course the story itself are all of the highest quality. One of only 15 individually bound copies with a holograph passage of the text in the author's hand, together with six signed and limited prints as well as material pertaining to the exhibition of the 15 limited editions in Oxford.Whilst it was unrelated to the main story-line in any other way than featuring some of the same characters, I found it both a fun and fascinating tale in its own right, with plenty of bloody action scenes and underhanded tactics taking place. Once Upon a Time in the North" is a worthy addition to the great saga, as we learn a lot about the young Lee Scoresby and how he became the man who would later be a major figure in Lyra's quest. He finds himself floating North to the windswept Arctic island of Novy Odense, where he and his hare daemon Hester are quickly tangled in a deadly plot involving an oil magnate, a corrupt mayoral candidate, and Lee's longtime nemesis from the Dakota Country, a hired killer with at least twenty murders to his name. Linked in with this theme is that concerning the marginalisation and demonization of a minority population, the engendering of prejudice – in this case concerning the bears…being a clear metaphor for similar portrayals and treatment of many minority populations in the non-Dark Materials world. It seemed illogical not to read this small volume after having consumed everything related to His Dark Materials, and once again I was charmed.

Once Upon a Time in the North - Waterstones

Serving as a companion or even introduction piece to His Dark Materials, the short story part of the book (there are other surprises, though if you have read the product description you probably know what they are by now) is a genuinely exciting account of Lee's (and, of course, Hester's) first meeting with sentient and honourable Polar Bear Iorek Byrnison.I've just finished a short book which will be coming out next spring, probably March or April in this country. His wife Pat (Christine Moore) was certainly more pragmatic and often less than impressed with Len’s schemes.
