About this deal

Kate Clancy demolishes the centuries of pseudoscience and misogyny that have wrongly made menstruation seem repulsive, and replaces them with a far more rigorous and fascinating view of this vital and nigh-miraculous act.

Maisie Hill uses her knowledge as a women’s health practitioner and doula to give us the handbook we’ve always needed. With sparkling narrative and a commitment to care, Clancy shows why menstruation matters for all of us. Whether you’re a seasoned menstruator, a young menstruator, or a parent of a soon-to-be menstruator, you need books about periods to help guide you through the whole bloody (and absolutely normal!Period counters the false theories that have long defined the study of the uterus, exposing the eugenic history of gynecology while providing an intersectional feminist perspective on menstruation science.

Out on August 19th 2021 with Wren and Rook (Hachette), this third book baby is a bit of a departure for me, as it’s a book for children (age 9 to 12) and it’s all about periods! A phenomenal book for everyone who wants or needs to know about periods (which is pretty much all of us! My Period is perfectly written for girls going through puberty, in a language that they will understand. Possible reasons for delayed periods include being underweight, doing lots of exercise (including dance, gymnastics and athletics), stress and a hormone imbalance. We help girls to learn about the changes that puberty brings, find mentors, learn from inspirational women and loads more, and your book is in perfect synergy with our work.We also don’t teach young people about periods as part of a cycle, and often tell them nothing about ovulation. If you are looking for other resources for tweens and teens on the site, we do have a number of different printables for tweens and teens, so why not check these out?

You might want to use pads for your very first period as tampons and cups can take some getting used to. A main theme throughout the book is that there is a diversity of menstrual experiences, and that is a good way for bodies (and people) to be. We want to help make growing up for girls stronger, safer and better supported and all the things in your book fit perfectly with our mission.

Because, hey, half-ish of the population gets their period, and it’s the most basic bodily function, and it shouldn’t be kept a secret anymore. Promoting the fact that everyone either has periods or knows someone who does, the book reduces the anxiety children face in asking for help. Profound and insightful, Period opens a window into what menstruation could be in a more just, more feminist future.

At least Always is looking to help in the US by donating to food banks on purchase; this is a great place to start. Clancy takes up a host of timely issues surrounding menstruation, from bodily autonomy, menstrual hygiene, and the COVID-19 vaccine to the ways racism, sexism, and medical betrayal warp public perceptions of menstruation and erase it from public life. This book is a transformative reframing of our understanding of the biology of menstruation and fertility, making clear the stakes of the scientific debates for our lives. Kate Clancy shatters the taboo and stigma surrounding periods that pervade Western cultures, offering a powerful and necessary rethinking of everything society has told you about menstruation. The hormones of the menstrual cycle profoundly influence our energy, mood and behaviour, but all too often we're taught that our hormones make us unreliable, moody bitches, or that it's our lot in life to put up with 'women's problems'.
