About this deal

Not many places sell it these days, at the moment I have one in the cupboard, one in my secret stash of cleaning products in the loft. To make the “solution” yourself is very easy: simply mix 1 tablespoons of white vinegar (not malt vinegar) with about 2 litres of water, and dispense into a used spray bottle (make sure you wash out the bottle first). I was going to give newspaper a test but amazingly could not find any newspaper in the house (sign of the times I guess).

Until that joyous day arrives, our friends at Tableau Products have just released something eerily familiar. For reasons lost to the mists of time, it was discontinued, the brand name still exists and is made as a clear liquid spray using a vinegar type solution, not the thick pink liquid of old. Both products also claim to remove 99% of bacteria (what is the 1% that is always so difficult for cleaner manufactures to remove or kill? I remember my mum using a speedy “wax on, wax off” approach to make sure she got it all off before it dried. I did this but then I still had to dry off the window with another dry cloth which sort of defeated the purpose.

The Sainsbury’s cleaner would be the good runner-up; it’s a lot cheaper than the Windolene spray and cleans/dries almost the same. Although we use a local window cleaner for cleaning the external windows, the inside window cleaning task is down to my wife and I.If you need to clean first floor windows or even conservatory roofs for that matter, then you are going to need a long handled squeegee and brush. When I worked at a butchers, we cleaned the glass windows with chalk and that was pretty good as well. Vinegar is generally regarded as good cleaner due to its high acidity that breaks down dirt build-up.

As an aside, I remember my mom using some pink Windolene thick liquid when I was a kid, looked hard work using it as well! I vaguely remember my grandparents also insisting on using old newspaper to clean windows rather than cloths. These cloths are sold on the benefits of not needing chemicals (“just add water”) and washable (so reusable).

According to the Oxford dictionary it may come from the word “squeege”, meaning press or squeeze, which was first recorded in 1783. Beauty Advent calendars are significantly pricier than chocolate ones, but they've become increasingly popular in the last few years as a way of bagging beauty products at a fraction of the normal cost. Rain or shine tomorrow my windows are being cleaned properly for the first time in ages with the pink stuff. Muscle (even though its more expensive than the others) with the caveat that the smell might be too strong for some people.

Alternatively you could use something like a old T-shirt but you would have to be careful that it doesn’t leave lint all over your nice clean windows. but that will have to be as i am not using anymore sprays, they tell us not to use sprays and then they take a liquid that we have been using for years that works , off the market no sense in that at all…. If you cannot find this invoice please contact us and we will supply a copy (please ensure you have checked thoroughly before requesting a new copy, including inside the cardboard flaps of all the boxes or attached to the exterior wrap on pallets). I’m not completely sold on this as benefit to be honest as the claim is based purely on the structure of the microfibre cloth rather than any anti-bacterial properties of the cloth. You can still get windolene but it is clear in a spray bottle, and I don't think it as good as the old stuff.
