It has an auto exposure system that helps combat the overly sensitive nature of instant film when shooting outdoors. The OneStep+ is the latest retro-inspired continuation camera from Polaroid Originals, modelled after one of the instant photography pioneer’s most famous creations.

The Fujifilm Instax Mini 40 is essentially the same camera, but in a nicer body for only slightly more money.Fuji's first foray into instant was a little later in the 1980s with cameras like the Instax 100, but only after it managed to avoid a potential lawsuit for infringing Polaroid's film patents. Now, a new generation of photographers understand the appeal of having a physical photo, rather than just a digital image on a computer or smartphone screen. Surprisingly, the new camera’s viewfinder is a lot harder to use as it doesn’t have the extended eyepiece of the original which ensures your cheek clears the sloping back of the camera. Not surprisingly, the OneStep 2 has the more modern arrangement of a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack (with in-camera charging via USB cable no less), but it will accept Type 600 films, both new and vintage, but whether it switches to using the pack’s power supply is unclear, especially as there’s a voltage difference between the two sources.

Film packs are especially affordable and the cameras that support it are usually simple, point-and-shoot affairs. Polaroid Originals has gone a long way to make it better than early generations, but you still need to block it from light as it develops, and take care not to use it in cold temperatures. While Fujifilm sells black-and-white film in its Mini and Wide formats, it doesn't sell its square film in monochrome.

The Polaroid Originals app, available as a free download for Android and iOS, is required to take advantage of additional camera functions. It's offset from the lens, but I didn't find parallax to be a big concern, even when using the camera's new portrait lens.

Hence the arrival of the Polaroid Now and Polaroid Go, its first new releases under the original brand name.

The aperture range isn’t known, nor the shutter speeds, but exposure control is programmed to some extent, including again balancing flash and daylight.
