About this deal

DC Jack Warr is clearly destined for higher things, and I look forward to following his progress' - PETER ROBINSON, No. He was working on something that should have been an open and shut case, a young man arrested for assault.

Pure Evil by Lynda La Plante | Goodreads

I like the fact that there is more than one investigation going on as this must be reality for most of our investigating officers out there keeping us safe. The title, Pure Evil, is a clever one, as we slowly discover the true extent of Rodney Middleton’s crimes. During this high point in her life, La Plante also published her most famous books (the Cold series). The supplementary stories of Jack’s mentor DCI Ridley and his abrupt removal from the public eye, and mother Penny’s secret rendezvous, are slow-burners. The slow reveal allows the author to keep the violence off the page, there is no doubting by the end of the novel just what has occured.Faced with a new boss that he just can't quite get the measure of, and a team who aren't aware of Jack's sideline investigation, there is that added conflict and sense of urgency which really keeps the story moving. And long suffering Maggie who not only has to put up with him at home but also has issues at work - overstretched and under staffed - bit political but a fair reflection of what is really happening so wholly allowed and respected. DS Jack Warr is assigned to finalise the case against Rodney Middleton, who has been arrested and charged with a serious assault. She trained for the stage at RADA and worked with the National theatre and RSC before becoming a television actress. Jack’s friend and colleague DCI Simon Ridley is suddenly suspended, accused of corruption that would end his career.

Pure Evil : The gripping and twisty new 2023 thriller from

Admittedly he does go a bit 'ostrich' when it comes to talking to his wife, Maggie, about his mother, Penny, who seems to be acting out of character. More than anything else, La Plante’s writing career was generated by famous books Cold Blood,Cold Shoulder and Cold Hard. Jack of course doesn’t take this instruction lying down and is concerned about his friend and mentor. Some of his actions in this book do end in dire consequences, but not necessarily as a direct result of his actions, more the gradual pursuit of proving Ridley's innocence. She then turned to writing - and made her breakthrough with the phenomenally successful TV series Widows. Age doesn’t mean anything when faced with a women this driven in her career, and this dedicated to the heart of her craft. He is a little morally ambiguous when it comes to towing the line and sticking to the letter of the law, but he actions always come from a place of good intent. My thanks, however, still go to the author, the publishers and NetGalley for the advance e-reader copy of this book.
