Clair didn’t really pull punches on the violence front in the first book, I felt like, in that case, it was still mostly in a way that empowered Isolde; I liked her as a bloodthirsty (encouraged by Adrian) heroine.

And you can argue that books in the same series can have different vibes; one can be more serious or emotional and another can be more action scenes with hilarious moments. While Adrian’s point of view is included, the majority of the story is told from Isolde’s perspective. I am the sort of person who tries to finish books because I don't like DNFing but 30% into this second book and I had enough! If you’ve read any works about matriarchal societies, the rise of patriarchy, or the witch hunts - this fantasy romance is such an inspiration of that.Handy, but too easy of a plot device, and I don't feel like it was needed when we already have gods, vampires, and magic. We were inches apart, and he brushed his fingers along my cheek, leaving a trail of heat that raced down my throat and into my stomach.

Often in books, we get a woman in a position of power, but she is unsure of herself, and has to grow into that role. Raised to be my father’s weapon against the Coven that took away his sister and his birthright, I would do anything to protect my younger brother from suffering the same fate. I was very interested in seeing where this story went next, after learning there was so much more history to the story of Adrian and Isolde than I’d originally thought. She's an antiheroine who is very confused by her new life and is trying to find a way to adapt but stuff keep happening.
