About this deal

She was chosen first for a baseball team even though she was a careless baseball player, and first for a spelling team though she was a poor speller. Queenie would curl against her back making comforting noises like a puppy lapping milk, and Bet would not remember anything in the morning. I guess that could be counted as historical, but when you've known people who lived at that time, it seems strange to consign those stories to history. The opening of the cupboard, the turning of the tap, the setting of the glass down on the counter, were like a series of little explosions. Up and down the aisles he strutted with his ears cocked, his bulgy blue eyes alert, his expression tense and quarrelsome.

Having been sorted into Pukwudgie, Queenie was incredibly kind towards people she realised were in pain or torment, as shown by how she consoled Newt Scamander about his relationship with Leta Lestrange - stating that Leta was a taker, whilst he needed a giver. With the first draft finished, I gave it to a few family members to read… the general consensus was that it was far too grim! I was also greatly helped by the recollections of Queenie’s granddaughters, Joanna and Gillian, who dredged their memories for stories Queenie had shared with them. At any moment he might stop by your desk to listen to your singing, to see if you were faking or out of tune. For example, when I told about my employment at the lunch counter he said, ‘Well you know, that’s something. It was just because he didn’t know that I could feel something other than loathing for Mr Vorguilla.

However, Jacob reassured Queenie of his love for her just before they were captured by a group of Grindelwald's followers led by Vinda Rosier - the very witch who had lured Queenie into Grindelwald's hands originally. I wasn’t sure this was a story I would stay interested in but found it was so worth sticking through the first couple chapters and continue on reading this incredible woman’s story. First as Ellen, then Nell, then Queenie, our protagonist adapts and proves she is well able to take care of herself even in some very nasty situations. Then he’d bring his head slowly down, his eyes bulging into yours and his hands working to shush the other voices, to bring you to your shame. Outgoing, a born leader, a showman (or show off), being sold to a travelling fair at the age of 6 turned out to be the best thing for our young heroine. Before we had finished our Cokes there were quick hard steps on the gravel and Mr Vorguilla came into the kitchen. When they entered, Queenie and Jacob shared some gigglewater, while Newt and Tina negotiated with Gnarlak.

If anybody wanted a reference it would be tricky – but I could say the lunch counter was in my home town. Then she looked in the oven and even in insane places like her dresser drawers and under the bed and on the closet shelf. The reader gets dropped into Ellen’s world when she is a six-year old child, one of many children who lives in extreme poverty with parents who are unable to adequately meet their children’s needs.

Many of the events in this section of the book come from actual newspaper reports from the time and made all the hours hunched over my laptop worth it! Newt noticed Jacob's odd behaviour and realised he had been enchanted by her, using a powerful love charm. I really enjoyed how she grew from being able to fend for herself despite everything to looking after so many others. Another time she was stopped at a crosswalk, leading a string of nursery-school children on their way to the swimming-pool or the park.

During that time I hadn’t seen her, and for a moment when I saw her in the group of people waiting for the train at Union Station, I hadn’t recognised her. There were so many elements I knew nothing about; the Norwich Yards, the traveling fair, illegal off-course betting, and that’s before I started examining the complex family relationships which played a huge role in Queenie’s life! Julia and Henry become the parents Ellen never had and the author does a wonderful job detailing their highs and lows. She is pulled in many directions as she balances her relationships with her Jamaican immigrant family, with her friends and with her work colleagues. Samuel Adewunmi (Secret Invasion and You Don't Know Me) will play Frank, a man with his own van and grand plans in life.I had thought of that ticket at the moment I watched Queenie tucking Andrew’s letter under the fold of her underpants. Perhaps he thought these were the sort of scenes that would appeal to me, in my present way of life. It is common for women to take on their husband's surname, but some couples decide to combine their surnames with a hyphen, and some men can and do take on their wives' surnames. However, an Occlumens of immense power (like Gellert Grindelwald) was able to fully conceal his true thoughts from her, as Queenie was unable to see through his Percival Graves disguise.
