The advantage of the horn with a block is reduced friction, and the horn can be raised to a higher reef point as well. This can be the simplest system to put a reef in, but can be one of the more problematic to get to work smoothly because it may have a lot of friction. I can stand in the companionway and reach forward to the mast to put the spectacles on the horns and to pull in the reefing lines. Ease the Halyard to just below the marked “Reef” position, pull in the reef line and secure, attach the tack reefing cringle to the reefing hook, then tension the Halyard. About 4 feet up from the foot or bottom edge of the sail, you will see two or three or more holes sewn into the belly of the sail.

Many bigger boats have at least two sets of reefing points which includes corresponding tacks and clews. Three-sided adhesion limits the amount of movement a seam can accept before failing, so we recommend applying bond breaker tape at the base of every seam to create two-sided adhesion, which allows the sides of the seam to work independently from the bottom, increasing flexibility. At the point where the first reefing specs can just be fitted over the horn, there is a green whipping on the halyard. We recommend taping all items in place first before drilling any holes andthe line to ensure friction is kept to a minimum. After proceeding as before, the reef is taken by simply by pulling on the single line – usually from the cockpit. If sail controls are tight and you’re still struggling with excessive heel, a lot of weather helm, or both, it’s past time to reef. Dave Proctor explains how to avoid some unpleasant surprises next spring Winterising the boat is a common task for many boat owners, regardless of where your boat is located.
