About this deal

If you’re feeling suicidal, and you don’t feel you can keep yourself safe right now, seek immediate help.

At the time, he barely knew if he was “walking left, right, walk over here or walk over there … I knew that I had to do it, not for any other reason but to cure my brain of the leftover effects of the trauma that I’d been through. He has long been an advocate for mental health and the awareness of male depression, anxiety and suicide, which came to prominence in 2021 when BBC1 broadcast his highly-praised documentary Roman Kemp: Our Silent Emergency (2021). I'm not a big Capital radio fan so wasn't aware of him as such but knew who he was because of his Dad mainly, but it's clear he doesn't really like people to associate him as for who his parents are and actually he turned down an offer to go in I'm a Celeb 3 years previous because he felt he hadn't made himself enough of a character and a place in the world and people would just know him as Martin Kemp's son, which is very admirable. In 2019, he took part in I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here (2002-), where he made it to the final and finished in third place. s battled depression since the age of 15, once contemplated suicide, and has bravely fought to smash the stigma still surrounding medication and mental health.A must read for anyone who has directly experienced suicide - Roman gets it, and explained exactly how I have felt for the past 13 years.

In 2021, Roman presented a BBC Three documentary exploring the mental health crisis facing young men and revealed he had considered taking his own life after battling depression for more than a decade. Born in Los Angeles to famous parents – Martin Kemp of Spandau Ballet fame and Shirlie Holliman, a backing singer for Wham! Massive credit to Roman for writing this, incredibly open and detailed, he highlights his mental health struggles and how he's coped with depression from a young age, and about the loss of his best friend to suicide which clearly had a big part to play in him writing the book. Amidst the shock, loss and confusion, Roman bravely made a moving BBC3 documentary about the alarming rates of suicide amongst young males. Who else could convince Ed Sheeran to tattoo Roman’s leg on air, drive around London playing cab-roulette with James Corden, get Craig David to freestyle rap, or rope Lewis Capaldi into a life-drawing class?Followed by the short chapters on what’s important to Roman and why they’re good for his mental health really made me think about what’s good for me and my own health. More than three quarters of men feel unable to confide in those closest to them about their problems. That being so folk in Roman's position are very much better equipped to cope with loss since access to mental health support in the UK and much of the world depends, to a large extent, on how wealthy you are.

Kemp was so celebrated for his appearance, earning a solo cover of the Face magazine, for instance, that he always felt he was “getting away with it” because of his looks. Indeed, Kemp’s favourite memory of Michael, who was godfather to Roman, was “one day, maybe about a year before he left us. Through conversations with experts, and those who have previously attempted suicide or had suicidal thoughts, the documentary reveals that something as simple as telling a friend you’re there for them on the phone if they ever get to a dark place is vital. Possibly the best part of the book I read was that in which he shares his experiences of his friend and colleague dying by suicide. Capital FM star Roman Kemp will discuss his fight with depression since the age of 15 in his new book ‘Are You Really OK?Roman Kemp is set to open up about how he once contemplated suicide and his battle with depression since childhood in a new book. Amidst the shock, loss and confusion, Roman bravely filmed a documentary about the rates of suicide amongst young males. Kemp has also presented London's New Year celebration show twice in 2017 and 2019 alongside performers Nile Rodgers, Chic and Craig David respectively. released an album together in 2019 (also featuring their daughter, Harley), and co-authored a book about their relationship.

And men are less likely to seek help and that all comes together into this sense of entrapment [where] suicidal thoughts are more likely. It took me days to read that section, whereas the final 40, which are properly about mental health, I read briefly in one sitting because they were fascinating. Kemp’s book celebrates the 80s as the decade that made him, but in a funny way, it was only as the decade drew to a close that he stepped out of his brother’s shadow. I completely understand where Roman is coming from when he talks about the loss and how “suicide grief” can impact you.
