A sharpening stone can be a great way to keep your knives super sharp, but you do need to pick up the technique to use it.

While it was once common to sharpen graphite and coloured pencils with a knife, we now use specially-designed sharpeners to do the job.Lots of knife enthusiasts swear by a traditional steel for sharpening, but in actual fact, this metal rod ‘hones’ a knife, which essentially means it realigns the blade – this, strictly speaking, doesn’t sharpen it. It can have a flat sharpener for sharpening flat and curved blades, sharpening slots for double bevelled knives and angled sharpeners for single bevel blades on scissors and shears. While our practical tub sharpeners have a plastic case, they feature a robust metal sharpener insert.

When the sharpener has more than one setting, the coarse setting is the sharpener and the fine one is normally similar to a honing steel. Sharpner got a picture this time (though he could not see Gohan's face himself because the shutter was moving).

Manual sharpeners are generally cheaper and simpler to use, but they require more effort, so they may not be ideal for people with limited hand grip or arm strength. It consists of four sharpening surfaces for different kinds of tools including scissors, knives, secateurs, shears and loppers.
