Her mother and father, Joy and Edward, take Sabine into their home despite the fact that their relationship with Kate has been very strained for many years.

While it was clear that the author was attempting to smooth the transition by having Joy and Sabine look at photos or by having Joy ostensibly telling Kate or Sabine a story, it still seemed to break up the narrative flow. Moyes began her writing career as a journalist, enjoying a stint at The Independent before she published her first novel Sheltering Rain in 2002.

I think I loved and got irritated by all three women in equal measures due to the consequences of certain actions in their pasts but I think one of the signs of a good story is that the characters should bring out some raw emotion in the reader. The characters are extremely realistic as if it’s mandatory to feel some sort of affinity to some of them with all their shortcomings and internal struggles. I can’t wait to see what this author will do several years (and hopefully several published books) down the road.
