She also collaborated with her daughter, Clara Vulliamy, on the Dixie O'Day series; which saw Shirley with an illustrator for the first time with Shirley writing the text and Clara creating the illustrations. Hughes was given two Honorary Degrees, one from the University of Liverpool in 2004, and the other from the University of Chester in 2012. Throughout her career, she won many awards and received many accolades, including a CBE for literature in 2017, and she won the inaugural BookTrust lifetime achievement award in 2015.

I was consistently drawn to her books as a young child; her illustrations are so warm, so inclusive, and her writing is full of understanding.
