The family name, and that of the largest genus, Lanius, is derived from the Latin word for "butcher", and some shrikes are also known as butcherbirds because of the habit, particularly of males, of impaling prey onto plant spines within their territories. The Northern Shrike has light, wavy grayish barring on the underparts, lighter-gray plumage on crown and back, and a narrower black mask that doesn't wrap over the top of the bill and eyes.Juveniles offer perhaps the best prospects, though only the palest birds will prove striking in the field.

An old pre-BBRC specimen record of nominate columbarius has been reviewed and rejected but the subspecies has now been readmitted to the British List on the basis of a bird in Caithness in February 2018 . Many borealis are readily diagnosable on the basis of greyer upperparts, whiter cheeks and underparts and, in fresh plumage, a stronger white midwing panel but worn kleinschmidti pose a potential pitfall. Woodchat Shrike comprises three subspecies – nominate senator across the Mediterranean and north-west Africa, badius (‘Balearic Woodchat Shrike’) on the islands of the western Mediterranean basin and niloticus (‘Eastern Woodchat Shrike’) in the Levant, the Caucasus and Iran (Cramp et al.And what's more, the beautiful artwork that adorns the sleeve, depicting a vibrant, shrike-filled Mediterranean landscape, will ensure this book looks as eye-catching on the shelf as it is informative when opened up. In turn, monedula intergrades with soemmerringii (‘Russian Jackdaw’) in a broad band from Finland to south-east Europe. It follows a familiar format to previous published titles in the Helm series, with an introductory section followed by the plates and then the species accounts. The subspecies aesalon is a regular breeder and winter visitor in Britain, subaesalon occurring as a migrant and in winter.
