About this deal

If you have a patio yourself that needs re-pointing then there would be no need to hire a professional as you could do it yourself. Hi we are in the middle of having light grey sandstone put down and I have been asked to choose a colour for the Silka. Whether you’re laying a new patio or tidying up an existing one, choosing the right patio grout is important. Whether you’ve got darker granite tiles or lighter limestone, you should be able to find a pre-mixed grout available in a colour that blends with your existing patio.

Overall, I’ve chosen the Sika FastFix All-Weather Self-Setting Paving Jointing Compound as the best patio grout. But if you have drizzly weather and the area stays damp, then the paving jointing compound will stay soft. Once applied, it sets firm without shrinking or cracking, providing a strong barrier against weeds and producing a seamless finish.

At first, I thought our stones had changed colour but it was an illusion due to having a cream compound in the joints compared to a much darker colour where no compound existed at all. We often struggle to remove any excess residue within the first few days but brushes off fairly easily after this time frame. This paving joint can simply be brushed in, with the edges smoothed using either a glove or a brush. Hi Helen, although you are suppose to wet the area before applying the paving jointing compound, it does eventually harden either way.It dries and hardens in around 36 hours, providing conditions are reasonable, which is faster than a lot of similar products on the market. Having just bought a tub of this today and experimenting on the same sandstone pavement as you I found your review really helpful. If the instructions indicate that the paving slabs need to be continuously wetted, you may need an extra pair of hands. If you are a company looking to start using this project, or a DIY person looking to do the work yourself then I would certainly recommend this product. Hi Kim, I once layed an Indian sandstone drive and we used a wet mortar mix (sand and cement) as we were unsure on the durability of the paving compound.

Clive Harris is the creator of DIY Garden and a professional landscape gardening consultant with over 6 years experience. For us, it saves us a huge amount of time and allows our apprentices to point patios whilst we get on with other things. Although the sandy affect could be the jointing compound still left on the patio, even if it looks like none is there. For this reason, I have always mixed a bucket worth of building sand and cement when pointing between the paving slabs and used dye when needed. It is also worth noting that all of the pictures in this post are patios that we have installed using this product!I used it yesterday and the weather has been dry (wetted the area before hand), went out to check it this morning (almost 24 hours later) and it is still as soft as when I applied it nearly 24 hours earlier! Pre-mixed patio grouts are undoubtedly the easiest to apply, especially for those with very little experience. Unfortunately, whether you use a mortar mix or the jointing compound for your pointing, jetwashing your patio always runs the risk of blasting some out. However, where we have put the Fastfix, the next morning ants have dug tiny holes through the compound when it was still soft – and also lifted it in certain parts. Hello, we had our garden patio laid last year – gardeners used sika but I felt it never properly dried out.

If you are driving on the slabs then any movement will cause them to crack so I would recommend sand and cement. We’ve dry brushed them several times and even scrubbed the larger affected areas with warm water and washing up liquid, but the “grey film” remains. If you leave it a couple more days and give it another sweep, if there is any residue left on the patio then it will be easy to sweep straight off once dry. They will then lay the slabs on top of the sand, then fill the gaps between the slabs with Sika Fast Fix, which they say will bond slabs together and slabs won’t move.
